Regal MR422, Autumn 1931. This is one of my favourite records. The contemporary reviewer in Gramophone (November 1931) didn't like it, but I note he didn't mention there was a war coming either. I think we can discount his blinkered outlook. As part of my current clean-up, I've reposted this using a slightly modified version of the visuals previously used on "Old Friends" by Mackey's Band. This is the best 3D demo I've done and it deserves the best tune.

This record marked an all too brief return to the Columbia label for Percival Mackey, after an absence of 3 years. Last year I uploaded his version of "I'm sailing off to China". from 1927. Hearing "June Kisses" it just demonstrates how much dance music changed beteen 1927 - 1930. I rather like those jaunty records from his first Columbia period in the mid '20's. This is an edited video from film taken at Southend airport on the afternoon of Friday 3rd Sept 2010, when Steve Noujaim arrived back from Cape Town to claim the new world record for London-Cape Town-London. Firstly, some apologies - I had to decode the film from DVD format & it seems to have compressed the picture laterally and lost quality somewhat. Plus - The film's a bit shakey in places, but I've kept the shakey bits in where radio clips can be heard, or where the aircraft is (more or less) in sight. The video opens with various aircraft (notably Vans RV types and 2 x Spitfires on the main reception apron) gathering to welcome Steve back. Steve arrives with a flypast the Tower. Once he's arrived, Steve has to go around before getting clearance to land (this didn't affect his time, as he was timed as he passed the Control Tower to complete the flight). Unfortunately the airport buildings conspired to block the view of the landing itself. A very weary Steve gets out after taxying in, to be welcomed by well-deserved applause and a glass of bubbly - not to mention a hug from his wife! A modern day hero in the light aviation world, who was inspired by Alex Henshaw, the original record holder's exploits in a modified Percival Mew Gull back in 1939. Well Done Steve! We should also thank Steve's sponsors, as well as his flight support team, and we should not forget his wife, who helped him to build the aircraft! November 1926 Teddy Brown was born in New York City and went on to the variety stage when he was only nine years old. From 1917 to 1919 he was a drummer and xylophonist with Earl Fuller's Rector Novelty Orchestra and recorded and performed on Broadway. In 1924 he became a member of Joseph C. Smith's band at New York's Hotel Plaza and in 1925 they toured England. From January 1926 to 1927 and again in 1928 Teddy led a band at the Cafe de Paris in London and made several records on the Imperial and Vocalion labels. He began to make solo xylophone records, some accompanied by a band. In 1929 he led a band at Ciro's Club and made several records with Percival Mackey's Band and Harry Bidgood's Band. He was very popular as a solo artist in the 1930s and extensively toured the country and made many radio appearances. Teddy's real name was Abraham Himmelbrand and he lived at Xylophone House, Sea Road, Littlehampton, Sussex. Teddy weighed 24 stones. Slavic mythology is the mythological aspect of the polytheistic religion that was practised by the Slavs before Christianisation. The religion possesses many common traits with other religions descended from the Proto-Indo-European religion. Unlike Greek or Egyptian mythology, there are no first-hand records for the study of Slavic mythology. Despite some arguable theories (for instance, the Book of Veles), it cannot be proven that the Slavs had any sort of writing system before Christianisation; therefore, all their original religious beliefs and traditions were likely passed down orally over the generations, and basically forgotten over the centuries following the arrival of Christianity. Maurice Elwin (1896 - 1976) was a prolific singer and recording artist, indeed it is difficult to think of a band with whom he did not record with during the 20's and 30's. Olive Groves (1900 - 1974) was a very popular broadcasting star also making many records as both solo artist in light opera and vocal selections and as a vocalist with dance orchestras.
