Performance Car Mania is quickly becoming the premiere modified car event in Victoria, and it's not hard to see why. The organisers set everything up to maximise the fun for the entrants. And if the entrants are happy then the spectators are as well, because they get to see some of the coolest cars around cutting loose. The new quarter mile strip was an interesting addition and although it was a tad bumpy in places it made for some interesting racing. We've squeezed as much action as we could into a reasonable time frame, but keep your eyes open for planty more vids from this event in the near future.

Finding the right balance between a well tuned street car and a flat-out performance car is no easy task. However that didn't stop Southern California resident Bob Hall from building what may just be one of the best vehicles we've ever driven. He started with an ultra clean 1968 Camaro SS convertible, fitted it with a supercharged LSA mill from a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, reworked the entire drivetrain and suspension, and in the end, created a car that's 44 years old but feels like it rolled out of the factory yesterday.

To those who are confused about how this works: It doesn't store energy to "give back" to the car when it "needs" it. Capacitors don't store that much energy. What this does is smoothen spikes in the voltage caused by all the various noise causing equipment like alternator, ignition coils, blowers, electronics,etc. Having a smoother line voltage optimizes the precision of electronics (electronics 101), and can also help in reducing micro-second voltage drops every time the ignition coil discharges. The car battery is bad at filtering these micro-second electrical spikes/dips because it has a high internal impedance. Although the battery can churn out 100 amps when needed, it cannot absorb and release current at high frequencies due to its chemistry. Having a bank of low-ESR capacitors, as an intermediate reservoir between the battery and the load, will help compensate for the battery's inherent weakness. Running the car without a battery altogether makes the spikes even worse. We all have been told not to run cars without the batteries because a direct draw of load from the alternator without a battery to hold the voltage can cause equipment damage. Products like these are simply taking it one step further in eliminating whatever high-frequency spikes that prevails.
