On June 27, 2010, Rhys Millen attempted to beat the current "Unlimited Class" World Record of 10:01.408 at the 88th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the "Race to the Clouds." For 10 years, it has been Rhys' dream to break the 10-minute barrier and this year he hoped to capture the elusive record and return it to the Millen name. This is look at his run and the challenges he faced in his custom built Genesis PM580: a 1850 pound, 750 horse power V6 designed specifically to conquer the 156 turns of this 12.52 mile course (of which this year, half is pavement) that begins at 9390 feet and finishes at the 14110 foot summit. June 26, 2011 Chip Yates piloted his homebuilt 240hp electric superbike to 14110 feet setting the world record for electric motorcycles on Pikes Peak and placing 2nd in class. Chip was hampered by 2.6 agonizingly slow miles of dirt, a huge oil slick on the Bottomless Pit right hand sweeper, and many hairpins had dirt strewn across them. Next year the course is entirely paved and Chip will be going for a top-10 or better result!

The HER-02 is an all-electric race car that beat all other electrics in the 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, placing 21st out of all 71 vehicles. The HER-02 raced up a 12000-foot summit on a 12.4-mile course with 156 turns in 12 minutes and 20 seconds. The car is a collaboration of Summit Motorsports from Japan; Yokohama Tire Corp., and AC Propulsion, an electric drivetrain manufacturer in San Dimas. Los Angeles Times reviewer Susan Carpenter takes the HER-02 for a spin at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Rhys Millen returned to Pikes Peak with the goal of setting the record up the 12.4-mile course and breaking the elusive 10-minute mark in the final year of the road comprising pavement and gravel. Unfortunately, the Hyundai Genesis RM580 brake issue forced Rhys into second place with a time of 10:09.24 Rhy's Dad, Rod Millen showed that he still had it with an impressive win in the 2WD competition.

The autonomous Audi research car, a joint project involving the Audi Electronics Research Lab, Stanford University and Oracle, completed a non-stop ascent up the legendary 12.42-mile rally race route in September 2010.
