In Memory of younge Irish children who were killed by the British Army and The RUC with plastic bullets. The Story Behind The Song: PLASTIC BULLETS Plastic bullets were introduced in the Northern Irish arena by the British army in 1973. Like his predecessor the plastic bullet was intended to immobilise individuals by aiming at the lower parts of the body over a distance of at least 20 metres. The projectile was by no means intended to be used at short range and aiming at the upper body was prohibited. The human, non-lethal aura of the plastic bullet shattered on 28 August 1975, when the 10 years old Stephen Geddis was fatally wounded by one of those projectiles. Although Stephen's death was caused by a stray bullet, which accidentally flew over the wall behind which the boy had sought cover, it was deliberately used against a bunch of kids. Most frightening aspect of it all is perhaps the fact that the soldiers immediately entered their armoured car and left the scene, withholding the unconscious boy first aid. Stephen died two days later in the hospital. In the following years the number of fatalities caused by plastic bullets increased dramatically. In all 17 people where killed by this allegedly non-lethal projectile, among which seven children like Stephen Geddis. Robin Dunwoody wrote the song Plastic Bullets is written in memory of two of them: Julie Livingstone and Carol Ann Kelly. An angry crowd was protesting the burning down of the UDPS party offices when things turned violent. At least one person was shot dead and two wounded when police and opposition supporters clashed in Democratic Republic of Congo's capital Kinshasa early on Tuesday. The violence flared when the UDPS party offices were burnt out. The UDPS party blamed the attack on their opponents ahead of elections. Witnesses say members of the crowd who had gathered in the area, began throwing stones at police, who retaliated with live ammunition as well as plastic bullets and tear gas. Presidential and parliamentary polls are due to take place in November. It will be the second set of elections since the last war ended in 2003. However, analysts say the votes could be hit by delays and a lack of confidence in the process. Voting material has still not arrived in the country and there are accusations of fraudulent electoral lists. In this latest round of violence, policemen injured from the stones were taken to Saint Joseph hospital, while medical staff at Bondeko Clinic say they treated demonstrators with bullet wounds.
