Plastics - Top Secret Man (SCTV stereodub)

This is the music video for "Top Secret Man" by the japanese 80's new wave/synthpop band, the Plastics, as show on SCTV (episode 96, "Midnight Video Special") back in 1982. Even they aired a not-so-pristine copy of the video, but I don't know if a better copy of the source exists anywhere. It starts w/ the original mono audio intro by Dave Thomas ('Doug' of Bob & Doug McKenzie) as a (borderline offensive?) japanese video host, but then a stereo copy of the song is dubbed over the actual video.

Mike Biddle: We can recycle plastic

www.ted.com Less than 10% of plastic trash is recycled -- compared to almost 90% of metals -- because of the massively complicated problem of finding and sorting the different kinds. Frustrated by this waste, Mike Biddle has developed a cheap and incredibly energy efficient plant that can, and does, recycle any kind of plastic.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. Plastic Plague

Far out at sea and deep in the nation's heartland, experts are discovering the disturbing consequences of a hitchhiker in our waters---plastic. On the remote islands in the Pacific, a team of researchers is trying to solve the mystery of why albatross chicks with full bellies are starving. Many miles away another team is finding more plastic than plankton in giant garbage patch of ocean called the North Pacific Gyre. Could these two events be related? What's equally worrisome, is the menacing wake plastic pollution leaves on fresh water and consequently, our health. Scientists in Missouri are finding a gender-bending chemical called bisphenol A in local streams who's source may be plastics. They are also finding this nasty compound leaching out of commonly used plastic products (including baby bottles).

Studying How Plastic Pollution Enters Ocean Food Supply

From voaspecialenglish.com | http Marcus Eriksen is not really fishing. He is catching plastic in the Atlantic Ocean. Eriksen wants to publicize the growing buildup of plastic waste in our oceans and to study its effects. MARCUS ERIKSEN: "These are five sub-tropical gyres in the world where the majority of the plastic in the world accumulates." ANNA CUMMINS: "The gyre is formed by ocean currents that couple with the spinning of the Earth, the Earth's rotation. And what happens is that you have, effectively, a massive whirlpool, this large spinning system, where debris can accumulate." Anna Cummins and her husband Marcus Eriksen set up a not-for-profit group called the 5 Gyres Institute. It helps researchers with studies of plastic pollution in the oceans. Cummins says plastic bags and bottles have little or no value after they are used. Most plastic waste can be found in solid-waste landfills or along rivers. A lot of this waste also washes out to sea. ANNA CUMMINS: "This becomes a problem in the marine environment because plastics are designed to last forever. They don't break down, they can't be digested by marine organisms and they persist in the ocean for thousands of years." When sailing, Eriksen and Cummins gather objects from the ocean's surface. Hundreds of things they caught have gone to a California laboratory for testing. ANNA CUMMINS: "What shocked me the most on all these trips is to cross an ocean, to cross for thousands and thousands of miles, and find that ...

Plastics...too valuable to throw away

Plastics have changed the world, and they continue to do so but the innovative potential of plastics is far from exhausted. Plastics are eco-efficient in many ways. For example, they efficiently insulate buildings, they provide light-weight and safe packaging, they reduce the weight of cars and make them quieter; and they help us to harness the sun and wind as energy sources. But at some point, every product comes to the end of its useful life. Energy recovery is the incineration of plastic waste, while simultaneously using the energy for generating electricity or steam or for providing process heat. Energy recovery is particularly suitable for mixed or contaminated fractions of plastic waste. The high calorific value of plastics is actually similar to that of fuel oil. Therefore, plastics can partly substitute fuel oil as primary raw material, immediately conserving primary resources. In the early years of the European Packaging Directive entering into force, the primary goal of the plastics industry was its contribution to ensuring the recovery of used plastics and creating the necessary recovery capacities. Today's goal is eco-efficiency, which means recovery that is efficient both in ecological and economic terms.

Why Is Plastic Packaging Toxic?

Learn more and download a free health report on toxins at www.dreliaz.org ! In this segment, Dr. Isaac Eliaz exposes the growing dangers of plastic packaging. Each year in the United States, nearly 90 million plastic bottles are purchased, burdening both the environment and your health. Certain chemicals contained in these plastic containers—including bisphenol-A (BPA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)—act as xenoestrogens, or substances that mimic estrogen in the body. They seep into your beverages during normal use, and are especially potent at high temperatures. These substances can disrupt crucial antioxidant and DNA activity, as well as interrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system. This influence has dangerous consequences, ultimately heightening the risk of cancer in adults, and contributing to developmental problems in infants and young children. To minimize damage to both the planet and your health, you should switch to glass or stainless steel bottles and containers, which can be safely re-used by everyone in the family. degrees that work: Plastics

Plastics touch every aspect of life. Without plastics, much of what we depend on daily at work and home would disappear. Despite its prevalence, the moldable material doesnt enjoy top-of-the-mind awareness, especially among the current generation of students. This episode of degrees that work. attempts to change that. The expertise of national experts is combined with the work of high school students engaged in a plastics project to illuminate the exciting nature and possibilities of the field. Visits to NPE 2009 in Chicago, the largest gathering of plastics professionals in the world, and to KNEX Brands, one of the largest injection molders in the country, provide additional insight into a sector that offers ample, rewarding career opportunities for todays students. A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids used in the manufacture of industrial products. Plastics are typically polymers of high molecular mass, and may contain other substances to improve performance and/or reduce production costs. Monomers of plastic are either natural or synthetic organic compounds. The word plastic is derived from the Greek πλαστικός (plastikos) meaning capable of being shaped or moulded, from πλαστός (plastos) meaning moulded. It refers to their malleability, or plasticity during manufacture, that allows them to be cast, pressed, or extruded into a variety of shapes—such as films, fibers, plates, tubes, bottles, boxes, and much more. Fantastic Plastic - Magic Molecules

DVD available at: www.longtailnet.com In only a century, plastics have pushed back the boundaries of human capabilities, revealing limitless frontiers waiting to be explored. Plastics are synthetic materials formed when small molecules are joined together to form huge molecular chains, called polymers. These extraordinary materials - largely taken for granted in the modern world - have penetrated every part of our existence. From aviation to military warfare, plastics are playing an ever-increasing role in shaping our future. Fantastic Plastic - Magic Molecules is the fascinating story of how these extremely strong, light and cheap materials have evolved into a multiplicity of uses today, and what the possibilities are in the years to come.
