Well, first of all, tin is corrosion resistant, so it will protect the copper from oxidation. It also enhances solderability. If these properties are all you want, you may only need electroless tin plating. There are several commercially available solutions that can do this. There's TINNIT made by a company called Datak which I have personally used. Another option is Liquid Tin made by MG Chemicals. However, the application for tin plating on PCBs that I am more interested in at the moment is as an etch resist. My previous experiments with TINNIT did not have favorable results. The tin dissolves almost instantly in the etchant. I don't think electroless tin plating plates tin at the required thickness to serve as an etch resist, but I haven't done enough testing to confirm this. Anyways, here's how the process works. Instead of having the traces and pads protected with photoresist and everything else you want etched away unprotected, it will be the opposite where the traces and pads are now unprotected and what gets etched away is now covered in photoresist.
