A proud team that had been criticized and scrutinized came crashing down on the Knicks today. And the Knicks cracked under the strain. Making a strong statement that they are far from finished, the Chicago Bulls pounded the Knicks, 103-83, this afternoon at Chicago Stadium in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference championship series. The victory cut the Knicks' edge to 2-1 in the four-of-seven-game series, with Game 4 to be played here Monday afternoon. The Bulls returned to their home court, and returned to the form that has won them back-to-back NBA titles. They embarrassed and frustrated the Knicks, who eventually lost their poise. John Starks was ejected with 9 minutes to play, receiving two technical fouls for charging after Michael Jordan. Although Starks accused Jordan of throwing an elbow and sticking a finger in his face, Starks's reaction was another indication of his temper getting the best of him. The Bulls rattled the Knicks early with their full-court press, eventually forcing New York into 20 turnovers. This was exactly the kind of performance the Knicks wanted to avoid. They were tentative offensively. They lost their aggressiveness, outrebounding Chicago just 35-30 after dominating that department in the previous two games. Other than Patrick Ewing (21 points), no Knick stepped up offensively. And New York's defense was porous, giving up 62 points in the first half. MJ's 1st 50+pt game is this Legendary Game. It's still the playoff record and is ranked 3rd in the book "Michael Jordan's Top 50 Games". NBA Sophomore MJ was just 23 years old but he would show the world in just his 6th playoff game that there would never be another player like him again. This Celtics team was considered perhaps the greatest team ever. Having won 67 games, 40-1 at home, 31 straight at home and on a 14 win streak, MJ single-handedly almost dismantled them. After scoring 49 points in Game 1 (which I also have up on youtube), McHale said, "That will never happen again." The Celtics went back and brainstormed to stop MJ and came back to hold MJ to 63. At times, putting 4-5 bodies on Jordan, Jordan was well, still Jordan. MJ missed 64 games in the regular season with a broken foot and returned just 6 weeks earlier but in this game, the legend of Michael Jordan was born. Scoring on vicious attacks, athletic jumpers from everywhere and finesse and power moves all at once, MJ displayed an intensity to win and take the entire Boston Team all by himself. It was chilling to watch. Scaring the guts out of the Champion Celtics in their unbeatable home court, MJ played a game that still stands as the greatest post-season record of all-time with 63 points. The game, which Chicago won 99-82, was a combination of "wasn't the Hawks' night" and "Derrick Rose was unstoppable." As the world currently ululates against Lebron James' recent shortcomings in the 2011 NBA Finals, it is just another reminder of how truly impenetrable the sanctity of Michael Jordan's legacy is. Thanks to Scottie Pippen's mentioning of Lebron in the same sentence as MJ just before the Finals, it served as a harbinger of things to come when anyone is compared to MJ; that is - the laughable absurdity of comparing anyone to MJ at all. While it is disastrous to compare anyone to the level of mastery MJ was able to attain, it can be intriguing to see another great player at the same age or arc in their careers. In this famous game, MJ is also age 26 and facing what would become that year's champion Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Finals. MJ is also down 2-3 games and facing elimination. But that's where the similarity ends. With Pippen out in the first minute with a concussion and MJ battling a groin/thigh injury, MJ truly became a one man gang and attacked Game 6 with all of his weapons blazing - going out with absolutely no bullets. In what was one of the most aggressive and inspiring performances ever in a loss, MJ initiated or was wholly involved in what appeared to be 99 of 100 plays. Whether it was scoring, passing, asserting his dominance while simultaneously uplifting his teammates, being the defensive stopper or plugging holes as the utility man - the passion, skill, and intensity with which MJ played was a spiritual experience.
