Tiny-Droid: Installing Android On The HP Veer

Devotees of the webOS ecosystem learned long ago not to underestimate the power of a devoted, motivated homebrew community. It was grassroots efforts like webOS-Internals that unlocked the potential of the platform and earned the respect and endorsement of Palm, and later HP. It should come as no surprise, then, that a group of similarly talented but differently motivated developers have come together for the common goal of altering yet another webOS device: the diminutive HP Veer. This time, though, their goal isn't to modify webOS, but to replace it- with Android. Fortunately, some of these sharp people took time out of their day to write some posts showing we regular types how to do it, too! Follow along in the video below as I take you through the ins and outs of putting Google's OS on one of the smallest smartphones on the market. AT&T HTC One X Vs. Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Watch our video comparison of AT&T's new flagship, the HTC One X Vs. Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Nexus. One of our contenders is Google's venerable mainstay of America's "most reliable," number-one, most-red-and-black wireless network; the other is a hot young upstart looking to steal the spotlight in the name of Big-Blue-number-two. One bears a proud South Korean heritage, while the other is Taiwan's newest crown jewel! One built of plastic, one of different plastic polycarbonate! Who will claim the title of America's best LTE Android smartphone? Well, maybe it's not all that dramatic ... but we definitely have things to compare. Things like build quality, display performance, and camera resolution. And how big an impact does Sense 4 have on Ice Cream Sandwich, anyway? Windows 8 Consumer Preview First Impressions

After the Windows 8 Consumer Preview was released this week, it took me a few hours to decide wether or not I wanted to install it on my old HP TouchSmart tm2 that I use daily and bought a while before the original iPad came out. Needless to say I took the plunge after the setup program told me just about everything I had already installed would be compatible. It turns out Windows 8 is going to be a lot like Windows Phone 7 and that's probably a good thing. You've got full screen "Metro" style apps that have no reminants of application chrome or even operating system controls. You've got the gorgeous live tiles that animate with pictures, social network notifications, messages, emails and weather. Everything is very smooth and responsive to the touch. However there are some big differences. First of all, I was quite content with the Windows 7 touch interface. You touch the buttons and they activate. That's pretty simple. Now that I've been using Windows 8 though, I'm much more impressed. The touch UI is designed to be both ergonomic, highly efficient, and clutter free! The main controls are right next to the bezel where your thumbs would be if you were holding a tablet. Just swipe your thumb along the left side to flip between open apps. Swipe across it and then back to show a list of thumbnails representing open apps that you can easily tap to open the one you're looking for. Then swiping on the right side with your thumb opens the "charms" for other types of operating ...

New iPad - What we Love and Hate

After spending several days with the new iPad, there's a lot we love (and hate) about it. In terms of the thing we hate: the screen, white ultra sharp, is warmer than the iPad 2, isn't as bright, and doesn't have the incredible viewing angles of its predessor. Something else we don't like much about the new iPad is how long it takes to charge: about 7 hours to go from 0% to 100%. Finally, the size and weight of the new iPad makes it a bit uncomfortable to hold in long reading sessions. What do we love? That display! It's unlike anything we've seen, and is most reminiscent of a printed magazine page. We also love the LTE, which provides faster-than-WiFi speeds wherever you are.

Nokia Lumia 900 vs HTC Titan II

Both the HTC Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 900 were released this week on AT&T. Both have many similarities as well. You've got high speed AT&T LTE data connections, Windows Phone 7.5, non-removable batteries, large screen sizes, 480x800 pixel screen resolutions, front facing cameras, 16Gb of storage, 512Mb of RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. But how do they differ and is that worth the price?

MicDroid gives you many options to adjust the pitch of you vocal recordings and gives users the ability to save recordings, make ringtones out of them, and even email them to friends. It's available on the Android Market for free, although there is a donation version for $2..99 (in case you want to show support to the developer). Our Tribute to Steve Jobs

Pocketnow editors remember Steve Jobs and his legacy on both Technology and Humanity. We start it off by remembering what described him best: "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." Website: pocketnow.com Twitter twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com

HTC Freestyle Hands On

The HTC Freestyle for AT&T is essentially an HTC Smart, but for the US. The Freestyle and Smart uses HTC's Brew MP platform which is intended to provide those that aren't quite ready for a smartphone with a device that acts like a smartphone. Seem strange? It is, though perhaps there is a market for this kind of device. In this video we take a look at the Freestyle and find that the operating system is pretty similar to Android in a lot of respects. Despite it only having a 528MB CPU and 256MB of RAM, the device felt fast. As a reminder that the Freestyle is not a smartphone, HTC has left out the WiFi. That said, you'll be able to pick up this sort-of-smart-but-dumb phone for $50.

Verizon LG Fathom Software Review

The LG Fathom from Verizon has a very clean installation of Windows Mobile 6.5.3, meaning that there aren't many added programs or user interface enhancements. This may be a good thing if you want a "light" experience. Of the software elements that are different, the most useful is the gesture pad on the unlock screen. You can use this area to draw the letter that corresponds to a program. The program will launch right from your lock screen, without you having to slide the unlocker. The Fathom doesn't come with Opera Mobile 10 or Skyfire, so you'll want to download one of those browsers. Once you do, browser performance is good, but not great. The Snapdragon processor does a decent job keeping up with multitasking and launching programs, but perhaps a shortage of RAM keeps the Fathom from really shining in terms of performance.

Verizon LG Fathom Hardware Review

If you're on Verizon and want a Windows Mobile device with a sliding keyboard, you now have two choices: the LG Fathom and the Touch Pro2. In this video, we cover the hardware of the Fathom. Overall, the device doesn't look or feel as high quality as the Touch Pro2. We like the stylus placement....it's within very easy reach. The keyboard feels good in general, but isn't as nice as that on the Touch Pro2. In terms of specifications, the Fathom is running the Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU at 1GHz. It has 256MB of RAM, and 512MB of ROM. For storage, it uses microSD, but Verizon didn't include any extra memory. The screen is resistive (which is why there is a stylus) and is 3.2" at 800x480 resolution. The color reproduction and contract of the screen was excellent. Beyond that, the Fathom has a proximity and light sensor, plus an accelerometer. It's a world phone, which is nice. It also has the usual suspects: WiFi, Bluetooth, and EVDO Rev A.
