In 1919, during the Tragic Week, a pogrom was held in Buenos Aires, in the Once neighbourhood. Of that event, it's been said that "it was done by some well-to-do boys who went out to hunt the kikes". Soviet Internal Troops (MVD) discuss trying to put down the Sumgait pogrom of 1988. From part five of Juris Podnieks' 1991 documentary "Soviets." According to Wikipedia: This was a pogrom targeting the Armenian population of Sumgait (Sumqayit) in Soviet Azerbaijan during February 1988. On February 27, 1988, large mobs made up of ethnic Azeris and other ethnicities went on to attack and kill Armenians both on the streets and in their apartments; widespread looting and a general lack of concern from police allowed the situation to worsen. On February 28, a small contingent of relatively unarmed Soviet MVD troops entered the city and unsuccessfully attempted to quell the rioting. The situation was finally defused when more heavily militarized units entered with tanks and other armored vehicles one day later. These forces imposed a state of martial law in Sumgait and brought the crisis to an end. The official death toll was 32 people (26 Armenians and 6 Azeris). Unofficial counts claim at least 200 people were killed.

January 19 marks the end of the bloody Baku Pogroms, during which the Armenian population of Baku was ethnically cleansed from the Azerbaijani capital in a week-long bloodbath that left hundreds dead, thousands wounded and many more without homes. The campaign, which began on January 13, lasted seven-days until the Kremlin finally deployed Soviet Troops into the city to end the violence. The pogroms, which resulted in the death of an estimated 300 Armenians, came as a direct response from Soviet Azerbaijan to the hundreds of thousands of Armenian demonstrators urging the Kremlin to allow Karabakh to reunite with Armenia in 1988.
