More than 100 people were injured in Spain as riot police clashed with protesters on Friday, as authorities cleared away a makeshift camp set up as part of a Spain-wide demonstration against the country's economic problems. The trouble started when police tried to clear the protesters from a main square in Barcelona. Many of the protesters, who are angry about high unemployment, anti-austerity measures and politicians' handling of the economy, refused to move. Police Arrest 73 in Occupy Wall Street Crackdown As Protesters Mark Six Months of Uprising

democracynow.org - Michael Moore led hundreds of people from the Left Forum conference to Zuccotti Park on Saturday where hundreds had gathered to re-occupy the park to mark six months since the launch of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which began last September and launched protests around the world that gave voice to "the 99 percent." That night, New York City police officers cleared the park making at least 73 arrests. Many people reported excessive use of force by officers, several cases were caught on camera. In one widely reported incident, a young woman suffered a seizure after she was pulled from the crowd and arrested. Witnesses say police initially ignored Cecily McMillan as she flopped about on the sidewalk with her hands zip-tied behind her back, but she was eventually taken away in an ambulance. Japan's police crack down on organised crime

Police in Japan have launched their biggest ever campaign to try to put an end to organised crime. The investigation includes trying to find out if the Yakuza gang, Japan's most notorious crime syndicate, played a part in a recent massive accounting scandal at camera giant, Olympus. If so, the 92-year-old maker of photographic and medical equipment could be de-listed from the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the coming weeks. In Tokyo's red-light district, where the Yakuza have long held sway, police now patrol the area, ready to shut down businesses run by what Japanese call "anti-social forces". Police have arresting several alleged crime bosses and exposed the role of the gangs in businesses such as construction and baseball. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Tokyo.

US police crackdown on media covering 'Occupy LA'

From: Press TV [VIDEO] US police crackdown on media covering Occupy LA Sat Dec 3, 2011 5:44PM GMT A recent video has emerged on the Internet showing the US police crackdown on media, this time by beating a photojournalist. Tyson Zoltan Heder, who was photographing the events of Occupy Los Angeles and the LAPD evicting the protesters, was beaten by the police and had his camera taken. Heder was then detained and charged with "assault www.presstv.ir .......................................................... Occupy LA: The Death of Mainstream Media 12.01.2011 Stephen Box RETHINKING LA -The LAPD's full-force eviction of Occupy LA from City Hall Park left a very crowded high road in its wake as the Mayor, the LAPD, and the occupiers all shared credit for their commitment to respect, restraint, and cooperation as the two month long occupation came to an end. An estimated 1400 LAPD officers participated in the well planned operation to evict the Occupy LA encampment which had swelled to about 1000 participants who had prepared for the confrontation with training in nonviolent civil disobedience. As the LAPD shed its hard core reputation and as the Occupy LA movement held to its nonviolent principles, it was the media who caved in and who were left behind as casualties on the battlefield. Two nights earlier, the evening of the Mayor's deadline, it was the media who drew the LAPD's first threat of arrest when they swarmed to the Occupy LA encampment in such numbers that they ...

Police Crackdown on OWS Protesters & Journalists on Movement's 3-Month Commemoration in NYC

DemocracyNow.org - Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters gathered Saturday in New York City to mark the three-month commemoration of the now-global movement. More than 50 people were arrested as demonstrators spent the day trying to occupy a new space following their eviction last month from Zuccotti Park. While covering the protest for Democracy Now!, two reporters were harassed by officers with the New York City Police Department. After an officer "jammed his fist into my throat and yelled at me to get back," Ryan Devereaux says he "was certain I was going to be hurt, or arrested, or both" even though he was wearing Democracy Now!-issued press credentials. At the same time, another officer reportedly hit videographer Jon Gerberg, credentialed by the NYPD, three times in the kidneys as he filmed the protest. "It goes to show you that it doesn't matter if you're wearing the credentials that 'Democracy Now!' has or you're wearing the credentials that are supposed to protect you, the NYPD seems to think it's okay to treat you as second-class citizen," Devereaux says. This comes after a number of journalists were roughed up by police as they covered the recent eviction of Zuccotti Park. Major news publications, including, the Associated Press and the New York Times, have called on NYPD to treat reporters with more respect. Today, Novermber 22, 2011 was the final funeral procession* for martyr Ali Yousif Bada'a who died in the early hours of November 19 after riot police car crushed him with their 4-wheel-drive vesicle into a wall. Before the funeral reaches it's destination riot police used tear gas, rubber pullets and vesicles to crackdown on mourners. This comes one day before the Bahraini royal independent commotion (formed and paid to by Bahrain authorities - the same authorities accused of serious human rights violation and torture) announces their report which faces public anger from protesters who think it will not be fair to them. *In Bahrain and some neighboring countries, the final funeral processions are held 3 days after the actual funeral procession (where the dead personal is buried). Also on the 40th day of death another funeral procession is held.

Police Crackdowns on Occupy Protests From Oakland to NYC Herald "The New Military Urbanism"

www.democracynow.org - After a wave of raids across the country in which police in riot gear broke up Occupy Wall Street encampments and arrested protesters, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan acknowledged in an interview with the BBC that she participated in a conference call with officials from 18 cities about how to deal with the Occupy movement. As police forces violently crack down on protests across the United States and Europe, Democracy Now! looks at the increasing influence of military technology on domestic police forces. Stephen Graham is professor of Cities and Society at Newcastle University in the UK His book is, "Cities Under Siege: The New Military Urbanism." "Why the Occupy movement is so powerful, what it's demonstrating, is that by occupying public spaces around the world — and particularly these extremely symbolic public spaces — it's reasserting that the city is the foundation space for democracy," Graham says. The city of Oakland, California, is reeling after one of the biggest protests the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement has seen. About 80 demonstrators were arrested and several injured after what started as a peaceful rally was met with a heavy-handed police response at the end of the day. Hundreds of arrests, accusations of police brutality and dozens of injuries - this is how the 'Occupy' movement in the US marked its two-month anniversary this week. Officers in riot gear tore down camps and broke up mostly peaceful demos against the unequal distribution of wealth in major American cities. At the heart of the campaign, in New York, a crowd of activists took to the subway and tried to block off the Stock Exchange. Evidence has been emerging of disproportionate police action in response to the rallies. At the University of California, a group of students staging a sit-down protest were pepper-sprayed in the face. In an earlier incident, an officer was filmed beating an Iraq war veteran so hard he suffered a ruptured spleen, although he seemed to pose no threat.
