Legal use of the drug has been in a grey zone for almost a decade, since the Supreme Court of Canada ruled marijuana use for medical reasons was permissible. However acquiring marijuana has been a problem for thousands of would-be users. A Louisiana man has been sentenced to life in prison after getting caught for the fourth time in possession of a sellable quantity of marijuana. 35 year old Cornell Hood II of Louisiana was arrested recently for possessing 2 pounds of marijuana. Unfortunately for him, this was his fourth conviction of marijuana possession with intent to sell. Previous three got him deferred sentences--so basically he's never served any jail time. Chief Burton announced that he had found no evidence of wrongdoing during a botched raid in February that resulted in the death of a dog, but said he hopes marijuana law is reformed at a state level. In 2007, GW Pharmaceuticals announced that it partnered with Otsuka to bring "Sativex" -- or liquefied marijuana -- to the US The companies recently completed Phase II efficacy and safety trials testing and began discussion with the FDA for Phase III testing. Phase III is generally thought to be the final step before the drug can be marketed in the US "GW Pharmaceuticals plc (AIM GWP) today announces the initiation of the Phase III clinical trials programme of Sativex in the treatment of pain in patients with advanced cancer, who experience inadequate analgesia during optimized chronic opioid therapy," GW said in a statement. "This indication represents the initial target indication for Sativex in the United States." Sativex is the brand name for a drug derived from cannabis sativa. It's an extract from the whole plant cannabis, not a synthetic compound. Even GW defines the drug (.pdf) as marijuana. Yet as the FDA is poised to approve the drug for Big Pharma, state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries that provide relief for thousands of Americans are under attack by other federal agencies. Drug smugglers trying to get marijuana across the Arizona-Mexico border have used a new approach: a huge catapult. National Guard troops operating a remote video surveillance system at the Naco Border Patrol Station say they observed several people preparing a catapult and launching packages over the International Border fence. The 3-yard-high (2.7 metres) catapult was found about 20 yards (18.2 metres) from the United States border on a flatbed towed by a sport utility vehicle, according to a Mexican army officer with the 45th military zone in the border state of Sonora. The catapult was capable of launching 4.4 pounds of marijuana at a time. Soldiers seized 35 pounds (15.9 kilogrammes) of marijuana, the vehicle and the catapult device.
