During this masterclass, the emphasis will be on gaining skills and insight in working with polyphony, with Josquin's two L'homme armé Masses serving as the musical context. The most important task of the musician in polyphony is bringing one's own musical line in harmony with that of the other musicians. What the musician needs are a listening ear, an open and critical mind, and a feeling for group unity. It is this continuous group dynamic that really brings polyphonic compositions to life. Every member of an ensemble is creatively involved in the development and realization of polyphonic works. The artistic 'leader' of the group brings the many ideas together into a rich artistic texture. This allows the composition to shine as it was 'authentically' intended. Using the Missa L'homme armé as the departure point, poly-phonic vocal techniques will be developed and applied. The participants will be trained in modal tuning, rhythmic finesse and complexity, and techniques which develop the rich pyramid of polyphonic sound. Improvisation will also be an important aspect of this masterclass. Limits are proportional to desire- EVERFLY The Sawlytron is a result of many limits. The desire to harness the sound of analogue while being unable to afford the likes of a Virus, Prophet, Moog etc. The Monotron represents the heritage of the Korg MS-10 and MS-20 with the same analogue filter as its predecessors. This is amazing in itself given the affordability of the Monotron. If you want a polyphonic analogue synth with an analog filter, the Monotron takes you halfway there. Equipped with a sampler you can take the Monotron the rest of the way to polyphonic bliss. Instead of just sampling one note and letting the sampler loop and pitch the same sound across the whole keyboard I wanted every note, every temperature varied, imperfect, cent to be recorded. This is part of the imperfection that makes analogue so desirable. The video shows the process of painstakingly sampling each note. Each sample lasts for 10 seconds, though it often took 30 second or more to track a note that was in tune within 3 cents for the duration of the sample. The sound in the end? See for yourself. One of the greatest things is being able to overdrive the filter which is where pluins often fail. A tutorial on how to map the samples in Logic's EXS24 is coming soon. When I touch the big knob under the screen I'm changing the filter type or tweaking filter parameters for the CS80 filter I picked up a fully loaded 4 month old Code 8 this week, with 8 Arp 2600 and 8 CS80 filters! I was up late last night playing it for hours.... Sounds a bit like an Oberheim OBX. When you turn on all the waveforms it will saturate a bit, so it's not super clean like everyone says. This is Two Part Invention No 13 in A minor from Johann Sebastian Bach. I performed this after 2,5 years of learning playing piano (from the scratch).
