Cole Porter - You're the Top - A Visual Guide

Cole Porter loved to write songs with lists of various items. "You're the Top" is probably the best known of these list songs. It was written for the Broadway show "Anything Goes" in 1934. Porter composed it during a cruise on Germany's Rhine River. He asked his fellow passengers to tell him what they considered important in their lives, or important in general, and Porter worked them into the lyric. For the record, he names an astonishing 37 persons, places and things in the course of the song. I've included a visual reference to every item he mentions. Actually there are many variations on "You're the Top," with the list changing with the times. This version is the one Porter himself recorded in 1934. It's been digitally remastered and cleaned up and sounds about as good as it did the day he laid down the track. Porter wasn't much of a singer, but he more than makes up for that with his enthusiasm and sense of fun.

Johnny Cash - Hey Porter

Hey Porter - Johnny Cash Enjoy! Lyrics: Hey, Porter, Hey Porter! Would you tell me the time? How much longer will it be 'Til we cross that Mason Dixon Line? At daylight will you tell that engineer to slow it down; Or better still, just stop the train 'Cause I want to look around. Hey, Porter! Hey Porter! What time did you say? How much longer will it be 'Till I can see the light of day? When we hit Dixie will you tell that engineer to ring his bell; And ask everybody that ain't asleep to stand right up and yell. Hey, Porter! Hey Porter! It's getting light outside. This old train is puffin' smoke and I have to strain my eyes. But ask that engineer if he will blow his whistle please, 'Cause I smell frost on cotton leaves, And I feel that Southern breeze. Hey, Porter! Hey, Porter! Please get my bags for me, I need nobody to tell me now that we're in Tennessee. Go tell that engineer to make that lonesome whistle scream. We're not so far from home so take it easy on the steam. Hey Porter! Hey Porter! Please open up the door. When they stop this train I'm gonna get off first 'Cause I can't wait no more. Tell that engineer I say, "Thanks a lot. I didn't mind the fare. I'm gonna set my feet on Southern soil And breathe that Southern air."

Gregory Porter - "Be Good (Lion's Song)" Official Video (Jazz, Soul Music)

"Be Good" is the first video from Jazz singer Gregory Porter's critically acclaimed album of the same name. Purchase the album: itunes.apple.com motema.com gregoryporter.com Video Credits: Directed by award winning filmmaker Pierre Bennu, with cinematography by Shawn Peters and special set work by visual artist Dirk Joseph. Shot entirely on location in Baltimore, Maryland, director Pierre Bennu visually compliments Porter's intense lyrics and smooth, soulful vocals with vibrant colors and whimsical storytelling, and sets it all against Charm City's unique backdrop. As two lovers traverse their everyday lives amidst the mundane, Bennu draws on the power of everyday magic, the fear of loss, and the yearning for love in what he calls a "lullaby for your inner child." "The dance of love is something that can be done alone but it is also fun with somebody else," says Bennu. "I wanted to show two characters; one who was so busy dancing alone, never looking to have a partner... and another so desperate for love that he would do whatever it took to get it. What that character finally realizes is that all he needed to offer forth was himself." To compliment his artistic vision, Bennu tapped the talents of Baltimore-based multidisciplinary visual artist Dirk Joseph, whose 'magical props' add significantly to the video's playful and enchanting sensibility.

Pullman Porters - Ordinary Men, Extraordinary History

They made beds and cleaned toilets. They shined shoes, dusted jackets, cooked meals and washed dishes. Yet the Pullman porters created history in the face of adversity and racial prejudice. They helped form the foundation for the black middle class, and became instrumental in the civil rights movement. Follow two former porters as they travel from their homes in Seattle to Oakland, Calif., where they were honored by Amtrak and the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum for their years of service. Troy Walker worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and Amtrak from 1944-1971. Walker was promoted from a dining car waiter to a lounge car attendant and finally a supervisor, when he retired after 37 years of working on the railroad. The son of a Pullman porter, Thomas H. Gray worked on the Santa Fe Railroad from 1955-1959. Gray was able to work as a chair car attendant for four summers while earning his college degree. He went on to work for Boeing for 32 years.

Gregory Porter - Illusion (Official Video)

Buy the album here: ow.ly Discover and share more great music at: membran.net http youtube.com With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him „a fantastic young singer," which makes the fact that Water (out now from Motema Music) is his recording debut even more impressive. A debut release it may be, yet Water flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the seasoned talents of the giants of blues, gospel and soul that have influenced Porter throughout his career. Some of the singers that Porter cites as influential are familiar - Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway - and others -- such as the pastor of the church he attended as a child among them - may never realize their impact on his development as an artist. While the work of singers such as Hathaway or Cole obviously helped to shape Porter's vocal styling, his own world view, as evidenced in his seven original compositions and his striking interpretation of classic songs such as „But Beautiful" and „Skylark," adds an emotional intensity that makes each of the CD's eleven tracks speak so eloquently.

Jazz, soul music - Gregory Porter - Lonely one

Vocal Jazz & soul music by Gregory Porter: motema.com "His all-solo-vocal take on "Feeling Good" is an absolute showstopper of personalized soul....He's right up there with Jose James as the next big male vocal jazz star. " - Allmusic.com Review by Michael G. Nastos "Warmth coats every line of Gregory Porter's intimate jazz and soul debut. Hints of Nat King Cole bleed through Porter's articulate phrasing, but the weight of Joe Williams and the spiritualism of Bill Withers resonates, too....Porter's conviction and traditionalism cuts a retro figure, but also delivers another refreshing, contemporary male jazz voice worth savoring. (4 out of 5 stars)" -- Creative Loafing "excellent.. I think Nat King Cole would be pleased." - SoulTracks.com Review by Howard Dukes With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him "a fantastic young singer," which makes the fact that Water (out now from Motema Music) is his recording debut even more impressive. Terminal Bar: Porters, Bouncers, and Bartenders

For ten years, Sheldon Nadelman took thousands of black and white photographs while bartending at the Terminal Bar, Times Square's most notorious watering hole of the 1970s. Murray Goldman, the bar's owner since 1957 was Sheldon's father-in-law as well as the filmmaker's grandfather. In Porters, Bouncers, and Bartenders, the third installment of the Terminal Bar series, we explore the staff who worked at the bar during Sheldon's decade-long stint. Gregory Porter 'real good hands'

Gregory Porter with real good hands from his last CD 'be good'. The album opens with the emotionally engaging "Painted On Canvas," and, on the title track, pianist Chip Crawford delivers dainty piano work, reflecting the "dancing" references in Porter's lyrics. Porter sings with Bill Withers-style bona fides on "Real Good Hands," as he convincingly explains to in-laws-to-be that he looks up to them and that their daughter will be taken care of. He exhibits a "flower power" attitude of peace and love as he marries jazz, soul and folk attributes on "Mother's Song," a tribute to his mother. While the emphasis is squarely placed on Porter's own music—he penned nine out of the twelve tunes—the album ends with a double shot of classic jazz. Porter lets loose on a stirring version of Nat Adderley's "Work Song," which features strong solo spots from saxophonists Yosuke Sato and Tivon Pennicott. The album ends with a mellow, a cappella take of "God Bless The Child." Porter presents various facets of his personality throughout the album, but the jubilant "On My Way To Harlem" best explains his artistry. In name checking the divine artistic triptych of Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and Marvin Gaye, Porter essentially outlines his own design as a soulful jazz poet. If Water heralded the arrival of the next big name in vocal jazz, then Be Good makes it clear that Porter still has plenty to say. Be Good is beyond great and he's here to stay.
