Last month we talked about shooting a portrait using natural light. Today, Nick Carter demonstrates how to create gorgeous fashion portrait using just one light. Single Light Source. If you feel comfortable using natural light in your photography then using a single light in the studio would be equivalent of owning your own sun (single light source). While nature can be unpredicted using an artificial source such as studio flash or continuous light will give you a full control. Using one light is a terrific way to learn. I went over to my friend Bill and Casey's house to see their 10 week old newborn Billy. I did shoot video of the entire thing but felt that it was not strong enough to cut together this time around. You will hear me explain the situaiton in the video below how Billy fell asleep right when we started which made it pretty hard to get interesting pictures. Following getting some ok pictures I sat down with Bill to discuss what we learned form the session and how it did not go exactly as we had hoped. You will see that at the very end of the video.

froknowsphoto.com Everybody needs to do this yet we forget it can be done in Lightroom! I go over my methods for sharpening and enhancing the eyes as well as softening the skin. Negative clarity is the key to softening the skin while lightening the iris (colored part!) helps to enhance the eye. Something I did forget to mention is you can also lighten the sclera (whitish, opaque part of the eye). Do not overdue it!!! Yes you want to make your portraits look great but don't go overboard and make the image look 'shopped'. Roddie is a self-taught photographer and he shares some tips for portrait photography that he's learned while shooting his Burning Man photos for the past 13 years. Patrick doesn't follow a strict checklist of techniques when it comes to photographing people. Instead, he focuses on connecting with people and capturing the moment. He learned photography by taking pictures of "stuff", and wasn't sure how to approach and take pictures of people. But if you are comfortable with and trust yourself, portraits are much easier than you think! Roddie approaches every portrait by maintaining eye contact with his subject as he frames the photo in his mind and raises his camera to quickly take the shot. Quick way of enhancing portrait without using patch/healing tools. This technique gives you total control of where you want the detail, and where not. This technique also greatly smoothen out skin, yet you still can manage how much detail you want to reveal using layer opacity. This method requires less tools, time and skill to achieve compare to other patch/heal/spot methods, but the end result is stunning. Only the first 2 layers is necessary for this technique, the other 2 layers name "blur background" is just the blooming effect, and all the other Photoshop filters I added is just for fun.
