Potato Farmer Poetry

Sometimes we all get caught up in our day-to-day duties and take for granted the people "behind the scenes." Here is a video recognizing the love and labor Idaho® potato farmers put into bringing America's favorite potato from the farm to the plates of millions of people around the globe.

Mechanical Potato Bug Picker

A potato farmer must constantly battle the potato bug. These undesirable yellow and black beetles are detrimental to the health of the potato crop. The bugs eat the leaves, an important source for capturing light from the sun so that the potato plant can produce nutrients. If the leaves are eaten the result is a stunted plant, which will produce smaller and fewer potatoes. Before the use of pesticides, farmers had to pick the bugs off the potato leaves by hand, a time-consuming and inefficient method. In the 1890s Allan Hunter, a Prince Edward Island inventor devised a machine to replace this inefficient method which he produced and sold to the local farmers. Hunter's Bug Picker was a device that the farmer rolled between the rows of potato plants. The paddles on either side of the machine whacked the leaves, hitting the bugs off the leaves and into a tray of kerosene below, thus killing the bugs. As was common with small equipment manufacturing companies of the 19th century, the Bug Picker was produced, sold and used locally in Prince Edward Island. This particular Bug Picker is one of only a few still left in existence. It signifies the important contribution of Prince Edward Island to the potato industry of Canada and the innovativeness of Canadians in the agriculture industry. Me For a Day - FULL LENGTH

43% of mums dont serve fresh potatoes as they take too long to prepare and cook. This new film examines why. When a recent survey revealed that mothers aged 25-45 are the lowest consumers of potatoes, the Potato Council realised that it had to find out why. However it decided to take a rather unconventional approach using a ground breaking study where a farmer swaps jobs with a mum and her young family, which it captured in this video!. The Potato Councils pioneering initiative aims to help farmers gain a closer understanding of their key consumers, young families, and encourage growers to develop products that respond better to their lifestyle needs. The Farmer: Farm manager Matt Spanton (31) was born into farming and following agricultural college joined TG Redsell in Faversham, Kent. He now runs a 3000 acre farm supplying all the major supermarkets with local produce. Brought up on potatoes he couldnt understand why families are not eating as many as they used to which is why he volunteered for the project. The Swap: In June the Havers joined Matt on his farm where he put them to work in the vast fields to tend and learn all about the skills and passion he feels are needed to grow potatoes. At the end of a long but rewarding day, Catherine threw down the challenge could Matt spend a day looking after her family to see if he could do everything needed to keep the kids and the household running as well as prepare and cook the familys tea? www.britishpotatoes.co.uk The ...

Alfalfa - Tates (Official Video)

*5th Anniversary Video* We're now on Facebook! - www.facebook.com Al and Alf escaped their respective Potato farms and met, by chance, in the woods in 2002. Both with an interest in songs and songwriting. The song "Tates" was written in 2004 at the same woods where the two met. Recording the song took more than two years as neither of the potatos have arms, and therefore had to learn to communicate with humans to produce the track. Alf has since spent his freedom playing the local Potato folk festivals as support for his fight against Potato farming. Which he recently described as "barbaric". Al has lived quietly since the escape, writing songs and learning the guitar. When Alf played "Tates" to him, Al became so attached to the song that he immediately learnt all the chords and the two went on tour.

Growing potatoes in bags part 1

This is something I'm trying out this year. I got the idea from the idea of raising potatoes in tires. I didn't have a bunch of old tires sitting around, (nor did I really want them!), so when I saw these bags advertised at Farmtek.com for $8.95 each, I thought they might do the trick. And in the Fall, when the potatoes are done growing and harvested, I can use them for leaves too. Also, I read an article on the Backwoodshome magazine site about raising potatoes in straw and composted manure. . . Hmmm. So, here I am combining the two -- raising potatoes "vertically" by mulching them with some some waste hay with goat manure mixed in. Here is the addy for the article on raising potatoes in straw: www.backwoodshome.com I'm always lookiing for ways to garden in less space as well as something easier than conventional gardening. Hopefully, this experiment will have me harvesting lots of delicious, Yukon Gold potatoes. Follow along and see if the results will be feast. . . or folly. : )
