The 2010 Potawatomi Pow-Wow - RRW #488

The Annual Prairie Band Potawatomi Pow-Wow on the Potawatomi Indian Reservation north of Topeka, Kansas. Pow Wow time is the Native American people's way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and make new ones. This is a time to renew thought of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage. Another belief is that when the Native Americans were forced onto reservations the government also forced them to have dances for the public to come and see. Before each dance they were lead through the town in a parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry. Pow Wow singers are very important figures in the Native American culture. Without them there would be no dancing. The songs are of many varieties, from religious to war to social. Drums are the heartbeat of a Pow-Wow, singers and dancers. Hike at Potawatomi Trail

My Dad took us hiking at Pinckney Recreation Area's Potawatomi Trail. It is a 17 mile Trail for hikers and mountain bikers. It is an intense trail where you have to battle gigantic hills and mountain bikes coming head-on towards you around bends that sometimes you can't see. We camped out in the middle of the trail and went swimming in the lake. It was a blast.

Potawatomi Zoo, South Bend, Indiana

A weird trip to Potawatomi Zoo. This is how they roll in North Central Indiana. Music is from the "Mighty Wind" soundtrack. Disclaimer: even though we make fun of parts of the park, it's clear that the zookeepers and staff really care a lot about the place, and families have a wonderful time there. Also, we went really early in the year while it was still a bit chilly so the zoo wasn't fully functioning yet.
