How to test a desktop computer power supply

Links for getting a power supply tester are on my website: www.defcon-5.com There are several ways in which you can test a desktop computer power supply. My perfered method is to use a power supply tester. This is because it's much faster, simpler, and there is less risk of having a component burn out or getting a nasty shock yourself. You of course can test a power supply using a volt meter as well. A volt meter will give you more information about the power supply, but in most cases is not needed. The only time I use a volt meter is when I suspect the issue could be the power supply even when my power supply tester shows that everything is fine. With a power supply tester all you have to do is connect the main power connector and the processor connector from the power supply to the tester. Then apply power to the power supply and you will get a reading of each voltage. When using a volt meter you will need to jumper the green wire to one of the black wires using a small piece of wire. Once that is done you can apply power to the power supply and begin testing each colored lead. Be sure sure to document each voltage, and then review them when complete for identifying issues. In general any voltage more than 5% off in either the positive or negative is an indicator of a bad power supply. You should be expecting voltages of +3.3, -12, 12, -5, and +5 if you are getting numbers outside of the 5% margin on those then that confirms the power supply is bad. I personally hold ...

Make a 12 VDC power supply for RC LiPo Battery Chargers.

Model airplanes and Helicopters come with battery chargers that usually need to be charged off a 12 vdc power supply. They are rather expensive, so the manufacturers do not include them with your models. So if you want to charge your heli and plane batteries in the house instead of in your car, try making your own supply, as I demonstrate here. Thanks to one of my Subscribers, Bryan, (bjudoka1) for putting the idea in my head. I was thinking that you could also run a wire right out of your home pc and use it at the same time.

How to Install a Power Supply Into Your Case (Bottom Mounted)

In this video, I'll show you how to install a power supply unit, or PSU, into your case. In this particular video, I'll be installing it into a case in which the PSU will be mounted --on the bottom.-- There are two different methods in which you can install your PSU: Fan on top: -Pulls air in from inside the case. This generally makes the PSU run a bit warmer due the warm air inside the case. Fan on bottom: -Pulls air in from the bottom of the case. This makes the PSU run cooler because the air outside the case is (in most cases) cooler than inside. -Make sure that you are putting your tower on a flat, hard surface. This will ensure your PSU gets ample airflow. Avoid putting your tower on a carpet floor if you mount this way.

DIY Hot-Wire Power Supply (Vid 1 of 2)

This is video 1 of 2 in my short series showing you how to build your own inexpensive, reliable, and safe power supply for heating the hot-wire for your foam-cutting equipment. Here is the parts list for items used in this build: MUST HAVE ITEMS: From Radio Shack... Enclosure (8"x6"x3", #270-1809) Transformer (25.2v, 2 amp, #273-1512B) Bind Post (#274-661) Banana Plugs (#274-721) From Lowes... Lutron Dimmer Switch (#D-600PH-DK) Nuts and bolts, or rivets for mounting components Additionally... An old AC power cord (2 or 3 prong) with appropriate plug Optional Parts I Recommend (also from Radio Shack) Fuse Holder (#270-364) Fuse (250 volt, 2 amp, #270-1023) 120 volt Neon Lamp (#272-0704) For more information on this project, tune in to TheCrashCast podcast (in iTunes, or at www.TheCrashCast.com), episode #82. EDIT: A lot of people are sending me emails asking me technical questions about this design. Please note that I am NOT an electrical engineer and my knowledge in this area is quite limited. Following are the links to information that I based my design on: www.instructables.com www.charlesriverrc.org www.utahflyers.org Now if you want a power supply with LOTS of power, and have the savvy to build it, then I highly recommend your building one of these: www.nsrca.org I have one of these and use it for all of my wire lengths about 28".

Solar power supply

My solar power supply that I created, three 12 watt panels charge two 12Ah sealed lead acid batteries to power a 750 watt inverter that I use to charge my laptop, charge my phone, power my 5.1 surround sound and many other things. All self contained in a wooden box (except the solar panels of course!), two 12V 12Ah rechargeable batteries (maplin), a 750 watt inverter (Black&Decker), all relevant cables, switches, sockets and fuse holder (Maplin), 10A ammeter (Virtual Village), 20V digital voltmeter (Virtual Village), 20A digital ammeter (Virtual Village), 6 amp solar charge controller (maplin), bits and bobs from around the house and of course a pc cooling fan for air flow (maplin). Batteries are separated from the inverter due to gas that may build up from charging and theres plenty of holes drilled in the box for air to flow in. (Just though I'd put that in because I know someone would complain about gas accumulation and air flow in a box with an inverter!)

Xbox 360 power brick supply repair

This might not work for everyone but figure it would post. Playing game it it just quit. Have not had any issues before this. Wiggled power cord at power brick that comes from wall it would kick off and on. Hold it really hard to one side and i could get 360 to work. most times amber light would come on but when i try to power up 360 power brick would die. So ripped it apart and fixed it. FOR FREE. Fuse I think was a 250v 8ah. i know it was 250v just not exact on amps. Sorry for some reason my software did not join all the videos I made to one. SO in thinking it did I erased the rest. BUT Xbox 360 Power Brick works perfect. Any questions let me know. I searched for this before I posted and it looks like no one has shown it yet. SO hope it helps.

Xbox 360 Slim Power Supply Fix / Repair

This video will show you how to fix an Xbox 360 Power Supply. I bought my Xbox 360 Slim a little over a year ago and it's already malfunctioning. The fan stops working and shuts down my xbox. The green light on the power supply turns red and it shuts down. I contacted customer support and since I'm out of my 1 year warranty, they would have to charge me $35 + shipping to send me a replacement power supply. I figure, might as well try to fix the one I have so that's what I did. It did fix the problem of my xbox shutting off after a short period, but unfortunately, it's still making a bit of noise.
