The Dead Sexy Mag Gadget Team stopped by the Powermat booth @ CES 2010 to get the 411 on this cool technology. There are 2 models of Powermats: Home & Office Powermat and Portable Powermat. Each come with a Powercube (flat white dongle that sits on the mat) and 8 interchangeable tips for your devices. Additional Powercubes can be purchased for simultaneously charging of up to 3 devices/mat. The Powercube allows the charge to pass from the Powermat into your devices. Most devices will end up using the Powercube. It comes with 8 tips in total. The default tip which is part of the Powercube is capable of charging a number of devices alone. The additional 7 interchangeable tips will allow you to connect to virtually all other devices. The other methods of charging is with custom cases. They are only available for certain Apple, Blackberry and Nintendo DS products. There's also the docking base for Apple too. Best to get the full details at www.powermat.com. They have pretty much all devices covered! Even with the convenience of the custom cases, your device might not look the same. There will be added "bulk" and your pretty will be concealed to some degree. If you're like me, I like to see the full design of my gadget as the manufacturer intended. What's Powermat's solution? The new PowerMat Wireless Charging System for iPhone ($69.99) is an update to PowerMat's iPhone offering. The solution is essentially a lower cost system for the company's inductive charging products. Powermat, with R&D headquarters outside of Jerusalem, has pioneered the development of wireless cell phone chargers. The technology is one of the first practical applications of technology developed by Nicola Tesla over 100 years ago. Powermat teamed up with American distributors to sell several million units in 2010, and recently inked a deal with GM to install their chargers in Chevy Volts.
Here's the updated inductive charging solution from Powermat for the iPhone 4. The new package features a single charging bay and a new sleeker case for the iPhone 4. The previous product for the iPhone 3G/3GS had an unsightly hump on the back where the case interfaced for inductive charging. The new case lacks the hump for a solution that doesn't appear much bigger than typical iPhone 4 cases. The Powermat 1Xi changer also gets an update as a single docking station for the iPhone 4 product. The iPhone 4 case can still charge on the company's larger docking pads, however. The Powermat Wireless Charging System for iPhone 4 includes the case and docking station. It retails for $59.99.
