Sidney Morgenbesser on the American Pragmatists: Section 1

The American Pragmatists: CS Peirce, William James, John Dewey In this program, Columbia University professor Sidney Morgenbesser discusses the nuances of pragmatic philosophy as expressed by three of America's greatest thinkers. Moranbesser examines Peirce's theory of meaning and the notion of fallibilism that supports the changing nature of truth. James' concept of meaning, knowledge, and truth is examined within the context of the usefulness of particular conceptual schemes. The discussion of Dewey focuses on the human quest for warranted beliefs, and his philosophy of education—a "bottom up" approach that bases instruction on a child's real problems and experiences. The Putnam-Rorty Debate and the Pragmatist Revival

American Pragmatism was, if not dead, at least on life support until revived by the debate between Hilary Putnam and Richard Rorty on truth, warrant, and reality. (At least according to some of these philosophers.) [From "American Philosopher", a film by Phillip McReynolds]

Idealism + Pragmatism

An interesting essay by a poster on the Daily Kos site. Worth mentioning, because some of us are involved in these intrinsic arguments. www.dailykos.com I am not sure whether this poster still supports a reform movement from within the Democratic Party or not. I, for one, do no longer believe that this is possible. Strong opposition is needed from without the party system. To my knowledge, neither MLK nor Malcolm X were members of the Democratic party. Change is possible, but only if people remain aware, informed and engaged and yes, enraged enough to turn the tables around. In order for this to be successful, the people must seek to divide those in power, not by joining some party, but by doing the exact opposite: no more alignments, period. Get a little leverage back, for heavens sake! The author of this essay is correct in saying, that massive pressure will be needed from below but he is utterly mis-guided in his belief, that this change will come about within an established party system beholden to high finance and the corporate elites who own it. I also believed this for a very long time, but after reading many, many congressional documents over the course of 15 years, I can no longer hold on to that hope. So, in essence, Im not the radical that he mentions in his essay, but rather the pragmatist who is aware of the truth in terms of the deals made in congressional committees. All you have to do, is to read the biographies of various members of Congress in order to ...

Why Obama? Because My Pragmatism Destroyed My Idealism

Yes, I know that the popular option will be "screw 'em both". Many of you in the Crocoduck Army want a third party to shake things up. Most of us care about something in the realm of politics, and we all have our dreams of how things should be. We all want the perfect candidate to help fulfill those dreams. I'm certainly no exception to these thoughts, but let's live in reality and make a choice, and stop pretending there is no choice to be made at all. There ARE differences, and not minor ones, between Romney and Obama! So sure, cultivate a third party by all means, but if they don't end up within striking distance in the polls by election day... well, it's up to you. Against Uncritical Pragmatism: Education for Doers Who Can Think and Thinkers Who Can Do

Speaker: Associate Professor Kenneth Paul Tan, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, OEA winner Synopsis: Pragmatism is popularly celebrated as a virtue of contemporary decision-making, where adaptability, a comfort with the eclectic, a focus on results, and faith in the cost-benefit calculus are valued over inflexible obedience to totalizing dogma. In Singapore, pragmatism is held up as a pillar of governance and a cultural reason for the nations widely acknowledged success. However, pragmatism can, in practice, degenerate into an anything goes attitude that replaces decision-making practices that are informed by an expanded rationality and deep knowledge of the significant ideas and values that have shaped the world. An uncritical pragmatism can limit human aspirations to a very narrow set of ends, obscured and protected from philosophical reflection, moral reasoning, and critique. Thus, ironically, pragmatism can turn into yet another dogma. In this lecture, I will argue for an educational approach that opposes uncritical pragmatism, suggesting from my own practice how curriculum and pedagogy can be designed to build capacity for philosophically informed critical thinking, a vital skill and habit for todays leadership in the public, private, and people sectors. About the Speaker: Kenneth Paul TAN is Assistant Dean (Academic Affairs) and Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy where he has taught since 2007. From 2000 to 2007, he taught at the ...

How to Grow Your Church (The Willow Creek / Purpose Driven Way)

Please listen to pastor david wilkerson's warning about this movement as well: www.youtube.com A simple video message explaining the danger of the current church growth movement. AKA The Purpose Driven or Willow Creek Association method. If you suspect your church is 'up the creek' go to willow creek association website and go to find a church and you see if your church is listed. That's how i found out about my former church. Also search the willow creek assoc or pastor.com website and see if "your pastor's message" is there( they download and share sermons). They usually use the latest TV Show(ie "Extreme" this or that, "Desperate Housewives") or current movie to "relate" to their audience. For further study, I recommend reading John MacArthur's book: "Ashamed of the Gospel: When the Church Becomes like the World" . My findings are not based on what others have told me about these movements. I was part of 2 seeker friendly churches and witnessed firsthand the problems. I've already read Warren's books the purpose driven church and purpose driven life and have read their teachings in the context.. I also recommend listening to, or reading the text of the sermons titled "The Gospel of Accommodation", "Falling Away to the Anti-Christ, and "Beware of the Wisdom of Men" preached by David Wilkerson and Carter Conlon. Each of these is available online for free. Try Greg Gordon's sermon index website. www.sermonindex.net "..the time will come when men will not put up with sound ...

Huw Price: Pragmatism, Expressivism and the Global Challenge Part 1

Pragmatism, Expressivism and the Global Challenge Huw Price & David Macarthur (Sydney) Expressivism is typically a local view. Thus an expressivist about moral or aesthetic judgments will contrast these judgments to genuinely descriptive claims (such as those of science, perhaps). This contrast comes under pressure from several directions, however. • Externally, it has been thought to be threatened by minimalism about truth, which—it is argued— leaves no room for the view that ethical claims are not really truth-evaluable. (If truth is thin, then it seems easy for moral claims be truth-evaluable: it is sufficient that X is good is true iff X is good, and who disputes that?) • Internally, it seems threatened by the quasi-realist program of explaining on expressivist foundations why non-descriptive claims behave like descriptive claims. If these explanations work in the hard cases, such as moral and aesthetic judgements, then surely theyll work in the easy cases, too—in which case the idea that the easy cases are genuinely descriptive seems an idle cog, not needed to explain the use of the statements in question. As first sight, it may seem as if these pressures push in opposite directions. Doesnt the first threaten to make everything descriptive, and the second to make everything expressive? So a problem for a local expressivist either way, in other words, but a very different kind of problem, in each case. On closer inspection, however, it turns out that both pressures ...

Peirce was educated as a chemist and employed as a scientist for 30 years. Today he is appreciated largely for his contributions to logic, mathematics, philosophy, scientific methodology, and semiotics, and for his founding of pragmatism. Pragmatic Metaphoric Philosophy

It's a curious thing That never ending argument Over what is right and what is wrong And what is you and what is not Where words lie end to end and yet do not Appear to describe anything; That dichotomous myth Seeming so enduring. Mirage me you, mirage me me Then will we all be free? Pontifications on the thoughts of others As though they aren't our sisters and brothers Or part of us, or what is right Where God might be or rather not So often do we lose the plot; And who is what and where and why, I'd really rather eat some pie (Actually that's poetic since I'm not a fan Of pastry so that leaves out flan) But you get my gist If I have to squirm and twist To find agreement, or if you insist I see another as my foe How can any of us grow Or even see reality? I'd really rather kiss or be kissed Pragmatically metaphorically Or love yourself as if you're me Or me be you and you be me It matters not for where we lie We cannot lie, for in truth we be Reflections in the others I.
