Two new presidential hopefuls have submitted their applications to Egypt's electoral commission. Omar Suleyman, who served as ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's intelligence chief, and the Muslim Brotherhood's alternative candidate Mohamed Morsy, handed in their papers on Sunday, the last day of candidate nominations. Despite his links with the Mubarak regime, Suleyman has a substantial support base. "We hope that General Omar Suleyman will be our president. He is a strong and fair man", one supporter says. "Some candidates try to benefit from the current difficult situation in the country, they are playing fools with their own people. Suleyman is the only real candidate", another says. The Muslim Brotherhood's main candidate - Khairat El-Shater - could face legal issues that could bar him from the presidential race. Bashir Abdulfattah, editor of Democracy Journal, believes the Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, no longer expects to win the presidential vote. "The Muslim Brotherhood understand that Omar Suleyman is likely to win the elections. In this situation the only opportunity left is to make Khairat El-Shater prime minister.
