ANDRE PREVIN - Skylark

Previn was born to a German Jewish family, although the exact year of his birth is ambiguous, as it is not absolutely certain whether the year was 1929 or 1930. Whilst most formal reports give 1929 as his birth year, Previn himself has stated that 1930 is his birth year.[2] This situation is because the family lost Previn's birth certificate when they left Germany in 1938. Most published reports give 1929 as the birth year, for convenience.[1] The Previn family emigrated to the United States in 1939 to escape the Nazi regime in Germany. André (as he would be known) became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1943, and grew up in Los Angeles. His elder brother was director Steve Previn. At André Previn's 1946 graduation from Beverly Hills High School he played a musical duet with Richard M. Sherman: Previn played the piano, accompanying Sherman (who played flute). He first came to prominence by arranging and composing Hollywood film scores in 1948. Coincidentally, twenty one years later, both composers won Oscars for different films, both winning in musical categories. In 1967, Previn became music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. In 1968, Previn began his tenure as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), serving in that post until 1979. During his LSO tenure, he and the LSO appeared on television in the programme André Previn's Music Night. From 1976 to 1984, Previn was music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), and ...

"Perdido" André Previn

"Perdido" a jazz composition by Juan Tizol is associated with Duke Ellington who first recorded it in 1941. André Previn included it in his tribute album to Ellington, A Touch Of Elegance: The Music Of Duke Ellington, released in 1961 on Columbia Records. Unfortunately the album has not been released on CD. There is a 1994 Columbia CD which has the same title as the LP but with a different song list. Fortunately "Perdido" is included on this CD.

LADY WITH THE BRAID (1971) - Dory Previn

I heard this song in the seventies and was taken by the lyrics and the music, particularly at the ethereal 'when you sleep do you have dreams?' bit. It just seemed different to everything else around at that time, and to me, even had a hint of creepiness. Dory Previn is an American lyricist, singer-songwriter and poet. During the late 1950s and 1960s she was a lyricist for motion picture songs, and with her first husband André Previn received several Academy Award nominations. In the 1970s, after their divorce, she released six albums of original songs and a live album. Dory Previn's lyrics from this period are characterised by their originality, their irony, and their honesty in dealing with her troubled personal life, as well as more generally about relationships, sexuality, religion and psychology. She has continued to work since then as a writer of song lyrics and prose. 'Lady with the Braid' was from one of her most acclaimed albums, 'Mythical Kings and Iguanas'. Update - Dory died on 14 Feb 2012 at the age of 86. (Summarised from Wikipedia). I have done a video using images of Dory and the Don Draper character from Mad Men, one of my favourite shows. I could imagine Don making his way through Dory's various scenarios. Comments are invited.

Andre Previn - Over the Rainbow

Over the Rainbow is Judy Garland's song: "When all the world is a hopeless jumble, And the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane, When all the clouds darken up the skyway, There's a rainbow highway to be found, Leading from your window pane, To a place behind the sun, Just a step beyond the rain." A young Andre Previn expands this pure lyric into musical poetry that is as inviting.

Like Young By André Previn

André Previn is a German-born American Academy and Grammy Award-winning pianist, conductor, and composer. In the mid 50s to mid 60s, and again more recently, he toured and recorded as a jazz pianist. He worked with Shelly Manne, Leroy Vinnegar, Benny Carter and others, and recorded with the David Rose Orchestra. Forgoing jazz for classical music, in 1967 he became music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. In 1968 he became principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, serving in that post until 1979. He gained wide attention and popularity with his composition "Like Young", recorded with the David Rose Orchestra. David Rose also released a version of "Like Young" featuring vibes instead of piano.
