Chorus Effect - Pro Tools 9

The chorus effect adds a blurring, slightly out-of-tune sound to a track. It comes from the concept of a choir; because there are multiple voices, not everybody is right at pitch and the timing is slightly blurred. Directions First, open up a Pro Tools session with tracks. In the mix window, decide on the track you'd like to add the effect to. In its channel strip, click on an empty insert section and select plug-in--Modulation--AIR Chorus (mono). The chorus effect window will open. Chorus Effect Window As with the other plug-ins, the chorus effect window contains ways to modify the parameters of the effect. There are multiple presets and knobs. Here are the main chorus parameters you should know: Rate: The faster this is, the shakier and more out of tune the chorus will sound. The slower the rate is, the slower the chorus will sound, giving it a swaying sound. The rate control is in all chorus effect plug-ins. Depth: This controls how out of tune and back in tune the chorus gets. A low depth is slightly out of tune, and a high one is very out of tune. The depth control is in all chorus effect plug-ins. Mix: This is the percentage of the effect happening on the track. You can add less or more of it. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Overdubbing - Pro Tools 9

Overdubbing refers to recording over tracks that already have recorded audio on them. For instance, you may have already recorded a session with drums, guitars, bass and vocals, or you may have just recorded a single track with only one instrument. Either way, the act of recording over that track or tracks to make a new product is called Overdubbing. How to Overdub in Pro Tools 9 1. To begin, create a new track and make sure the Track Record Enable button is turned on for the track you're recording to. 2. Place this new track directly above or directly below the track you're going to be mimicking. 3. Make sure you have the correct Input selected, such as Input 1, and the correct Output setting, such as Output 1-2. 4. When you're ready, press Record. As you listen to the playback of the original audio track, record on top of it by repeating what you hear. Be sure what you repeat is exact and precise so that the two audio tracks seamlessly blend together. Overdubbing is a really good technique to use to add layers to vocal tracks. Recording a Single Track - Pro Tools 9

To record a single track, you'll first need to create a new track. To do so, first either navigate to the top menu bar and click Track -- New or press Shift+Command+N on your keyboard. The New Tracks window will appear. Choose the type of track you would like to create, which would most likely be an Audio Track if you're recording something with a microphone, and press Create. Make sure the Input and Output settings are correct. Your Interface should be set to the same Input that your microphone is plugged in to. If your microphone is plugged into Input 1, then choose IN 1 for the track's Input in Pro Tools. Your Output should be set to OUT 1-2 (Stereo). You should now be able to turn on the Track Record Enable button and receive an audio signal. You can tell if everything is working correctly by viewing the Velocity meter in the edit window. You should see the green, yellow, orange and red bars light up accordingly. If not, either check your Input and Output settings and make sure they're correct and matching, or adjust your signal levels. When you're ready to record, either navigate to the top tool bar and press the Record button followed by the Play button, or press 3 on the numeric keypad. Press 3 again to stop recording when you're done. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Loop Recording - Pro Tools 9

Loop recording allows you to set an in point and an out point of a certain region in your timeline. This can come in handy if, say, you want to do multiple takes of a part and you don't want to have to stop, reset and start recording over and over again. This feature allows you to enable loop recording on one track so you can record the same take several times until you're satisfied. Pro Tools will automatically separate each take for you, and when you're done you can choose which recording you like best. Setting Up Loop Recording 1. To begin, click and drag across the section of your audio region that you wish to loop record over. 2. Be sure to leave some space before and after the peaks in the audio wave to give yourself some breathing space. 3. Navigate to the top tool bar, right-click on the record button and choose Loop from the drop down menu that appears. 4. When you start recording, you will begin at the place in the timeline where the red arrow points downward and continue to the red arrow pointing up. 5. Then, the marker will cycle around to the first downward pointing red arrow and record the same region again. 6. When you've finished recording your multiple takes, right-click on the looped region to reveal a drop down menu. 7. To choose between the different takes, look under Matches in the drop down menu and navigate to the bottom audio files under Alternates. 8. If you recorded four takes, those audio files would be the bottom four. Read more by visiting our <b>...</b>

Keyboard Focus (Shortcuts) - Pro Tools 9

What Is Keyboard Focus? The Keyboard Focus, as it's called, is what enables you to use shortcuts in Pro Tools 9. Virtually every computer program made has keyboard shortcuts programmed into its coding, and they can help you increase your speed, efficiency and workflow. How Do They Work? Shortcuts tend to make it easy to perform common functions that you may find yourself constantly using on a regular basis in a particular program. By default, Pro Tools turns off keyboard shortcuts to disable them. To turn them on and enable them, navigate to the top right corner of the edit window and click the button with the letters a and z. When the button is highlighted a yellow color, then keyboard shortcuts are enabled. Here are some listed keyboard shortcuts: * T - zoom in * R - zoom out * Command+Shift+N - new track * Command+= - mix window * Command+S - save You can easily view every keyboard shortcut under each function in the top menu bar. Metronome Click Track - Pro Tools 9

What Is a Metronome? The Metronome in Pro Tools is a track that is dedicated solely to keeping the timing and rhythm of your beats per minute perfectly on cue. It makes a repeated, mechanical clicking sound and can be adjusted easily. Working with the Metronome Click Track You need to set up your click track before you start recording, because you'll want to record to its tempo. This will keep you in time with your song. Without the click track your playing and singing could potentially sound sloppy. It also really comes in handy when you're editing, because playing in time to a click track makes it much easier to line up your instrument and vocal tracks with the grid. 1. The Click Track can be seen as the far left channel in the mixer window. 2. Right-click on it for more options. You can delete it if you wish. 3. If you want to add a click track, make a new track by pressing Command+Shift+N. You can also navigate to the top menu bar and click Track -- New. 4. This will bring up the New Tracks dialog box. To make a click track, choose Aux Input from the drop down menu. You need to choose this input type because, technically speaking, the click is like an instrument. 5. Double-click your new track in the mixer window to rename it. 6. To specify its use, navigate to the very top of the track in the mixer window and click on the top. A menu will appear. Choose plug-in -- Instrument -- Click (mono). 7. You have the ability to change how loud or soft the accented and <b>...</b>

Markers - Pro Tools 9

What Are Markers? Markers have a separate timeline in Pro Tools, similar to Bars|Beats, Minutes:Seconds, etc. However, Markers places a marker inside Pro Tools and helps you separate and organize your song based on category, such as verse, chorus, second verse, bridge, solo, etc. Markers essentially break up your song into chunks so you can navigate the project better and jump from one marker to another. How to Create a Marker To create a Marker, all you have to do is make sure the play marker is where you want it to be and press Enter on the keyboard (not Return but Enter next to the numeric numpad). This brings up the New Memory Location dialog box. Another way is to make sure the play marker is where you want it to be and click the small plus sign next to Markers in the top left corner. Name your new marker according to what part of the song it represents on your timeline. To add another Marker, place the play marker at the spot where you want to create the Marker and press Enter next to the numpad. Each time you place a new Marker, that section appears as a different color on the timeline. When you're done placing all of your Markers, you can easily see them all in one location by pressing Command+5 (numpad 5). This brings up the Memory Locations dialog box where you can view all of your Markers. You can also access this by navigating to the top menu bar and clicking Window -- Memory Locations. Using a Limiter - Pro Tools 9

A limiter is an exaggerated version of a compressor. A compressor allows a signal to get through a certain point and then attenuates it, easing it down. A limiter creates a ceiling for the signal, a barrier that it cannot pass. Use the limiter sparingly. It's rarely very useful in mixing. If a drummer is inconsistent and plays certain parts extremely loudly, a limiter can be used to bring it down to a normal level. A limiter is also used in mastering a mix, but that's a different subject. Directions 1. Pro Tools groups together the limiter and the compressor as one plug-in insert. To access it, open up a session with a track. Select and loop a part of the track. In the mix window, add the default compressor plug-in insert to a track, opening the compressor window. 2. In this default window, a limiter is a type of preset. You can choose Gentle Limiting or Hard Limiting from the presets menu. Gentle limiting employs a lower ratio and attack speed, while hard limiting, called brick wall limiting, has a very high ratio and attack speed. To illustrate the differences between a limiter and a compressor, choose Hard Limiting. You can see a graph of your track in the xy axis map. After the threshold line, there is a straight horizontal line, the ceiling you've created. Note that the ratio is now 100.0 : 1, much higher than any you'd use for compression. This ratio is pushing down the signal so much that it's crushing it. The track will sound sound distorted. 3. Switch the default <b>...</b>

Using a Master Fader - Pro Tools 9

After you've recorded your music and want to start mixing it, it's a good idea to set up a master fader. This lets you control all of the sound output from one single channel. Start off with the mixing window in your Pro Tools session. You don't really need the editing window while you're mixing, so you can focus on the mix window instead. To open or close the mix window, press Apple+"=" sign. The window will display all of the track channels for your project. Now you can create a master fader once you're in the mix window. Do this the same way you would add a new track: hold Shift+Apple+N or go to Track--New. A New Tracks window will open. Select Master Fader from the dropdown menu and make sure to make it Stereo. Then click Create and your new channel will be added to the window. The master fader automatically controls the sound of all the tracks in your project. You can play the song and use the the master fader's slider to raise or lower the overall volume. Master faders also have a top Inserts section where you can add effects to the output. Click on an empty Inserts box, select multichannel plug-in and then select the effect you want to use. The master fader also allows you to control the entire song's peak level so that there's room left when you master it. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Writing Plug in Automation - Pro Tools 9

While listening to a track, you may be adjusting the parameters of a plug-in effect. You can choose to automate these changes, so that you don't have to change them again every time you play the track. In this tutorial, we'll create an effect and then automate it. The effect we'll create is used often in pop songs and DJ songs. It makes parts of the track sound muffled, as though you're listening to it underwater or from outside of the club where it's being played. It slowly dips down and then comes back up. The effect is made by using a low-pass filter and cutting all the highs. For this tutorial, it'll be placed over the entire track. Step 1: Planning Out the Effect 1. Open up a session in Pro Tools and go to the mix window. At the top of the master track's channel strip, click on an empty insert and then click multichannel plug-in--EQ--EQ 3 7-Band (stereo). The 7-band window will open. 2. In the Low-Pass Filter (LPF) section, click the IN button to enable the parameter. Raise the octave to 24 dB/oct. 3. Play the track, and at the point you'd like to start the effect, turn the frequency down far enough that the track sounds muffled and almost inaudible. When you'd like the song to come back in, turn the frequency all the way back up. Step 2: Automating the Effect 1. At the top of the window, click on the button below the word Auto. This button features an icon with two windows. The button is in all of the plug-ins in Pro Tools, so you can use it to automate any of them <b>...</b>

Tempo - Pro Tools 9

How to Adjust Tempo Pro Tools 9 has the ability to map out your Tempo. This can come in handy if you happen to have a song with multiple, changing tempos. While most songs stick to one tempo, there are some songs that change tempos. You could also record multiple songs in one session, with each song at a different tempo. The Tempo map is the green bar in the timeline. Click on the small arrow to the left of Tempo to expand its view and open up the Tempo map. Say, for instance, you have two different songs in the same session. Song 1 is at one tempo and Song 2 is at another tempo. Place the play marker at the beginning of the second song and then click the small plus sign that is associated with Tempo to the left of the timeline. This will bring up the Tempo Change dialog box. Make whatever changes you want to make to the BPM (beats per minute) and click OK. You can also change the Tempo of a small section of a song and have it return to its original speed by grabbing the Pencil Tool in the top tool bar. For this tutorial, Line is selected. With this tool, you can map out your tempo by clicking and dragging across the Tempo timeline. Begin at the section of the song where you would like the tempo to slow down and click and drag to make a downward line. To have the Tempo return to its original speed, grab the Smart Tool and select the last point of the line made in the Tempo timeline. Drag that line back up to its original Tempo. Songwriter Template - Pro Tools 9

The Songwriter Template is a pre-installed template in Pro Tools that is designed to help you get started with recording a song. The template is catered more for a songwriter who is looking to record demos and rough ideas for songs. It's slightly different than any other template. When you open Pro Tools you'll be presented with the Quick Start dialog box. Choose Create Session from Template and select Songwriter from the drop down menu. The various sub-options you can choose from vary between guitar, piano and vocal-centered templates. Choose the template that best matches the instrument you're using to write your songs. In this tutorial, Pianist is chosen. The session you create will come with a bunch of pre-loaded tracks that are catered to songwriting. The first track is Percussion, which comes pre-loaded with a percussive beat that's not as mechanical-sounding as a metronome. You also have Bass, Piano and Acoustic Guitar. You're still given a Click track in case you don't like the Percussion track. Also, the yellow bar to the left of the top tracks indicates that they're MIDI tracks. The blue indicates audio tracks. Pro Tools 9 with RME Fireface UFX.mov

Since the launch of Avid's Pro Tools 9 Native, we have been continuously asked if it will work with RME hardware. And the answer is "Yes it will" and "Yes it does". So, when Pro Tools 9 Native landed on our desk earlier this week, we thought we would make a quick video showing Avid's Pro Tools 9 Native working seamlessly with the new RME Fireface UFX. The install was a breeze and it really looks great, we can't wait to start really getting our heads into it. Our thanks to the guys at Avid UK.

Record + Mix Template - Pro Tools 9

The Record + Mix Template will help you get started in Pro Tools. The template sets up a certain number of pre-loaded tracks that are already named for you. It also comes with a set number of plugins for you to work with. When you open Pro Tools you'll see the Quick Start dialog box. Choose Create Session from Template and select Record + Mix from the drop down menu. This template is geared more for audio engineers. It's going to give you many different tracks for multiple instruments, as well as lots of plugins that are good for mixing specifically. It comes with things like EQs, reverbs and such. Select 32+EQ+Dyn+FX Returns from the sub-option menu and press OK. This template comes pre-loaded with tracks specifically for EQs, dynamics, sound effects and returns. An interesting thing about this template is it does not name any of the tracks. Instead, it leaves you with the freedom to name them yourself. The template really just comes pre-loaded with 32 tracks, including reverb, delay, chorus, headphones and a click track. You can easily rename a track by double-clicking on its title (Audio 1, Audio 2, etc.) and entering the track's new name in the dialog box. In the mixer window each track comes equipped with EQs, Sends (including reverb, delay, chorus and headphones) and I/Os. This saves a lot of time because you don't need to set up these Sends at all. *Note: Pro Tools 9 allows up to 32 tracks in a project. Pro Tools 9 HD allows unlimited tracks. Creating Click Track - Pro Tools 9

When you record, it's important and extremely helpful to play to a metronome or click track to stay in time with the tempo. It's absolutely vital that you record in time with the tempo and meter of your song for both editing and play back purposes. There are many options in Pro Tools 9 that allow you to customize and alter the metronome by creating a fully customizable click track. Create a Click Track 1. Create a new track by pressing Shift+Command+N. This will bring up the New Tracks dialog box. Choose Aux Input from the appropriate drop down menu and press Create. 2. This will create a new track in the edit window called Aux 1. Rename this track by double-clicking on the track name and titling it Click Track. 3. Call up the mix window by navigating to the top menu bar and clicking Window -- Mix. 4. Click on one of the Inserts tabs at the top of the Click Track channel strip in the mix window and choose plug-in -- Instrument -- Click (mono). 5. In the dialog box that appears, drag the slider associated with Accented to the right until its dB level is something like -2.0. 6. This will make it so the accented click that occurs every measure will be a little louder than the rest of the Unaccented clicks. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Panning - Pro Tools 9

Adjust Panning in the Mix Window Panning inside the mix window can be done with the pan knob. The knob was implemented into the mix window in Pro Tools 8. Older versions featured a slider function for panning. When the white hash mark on the knob is vertical and facing up, then the pan is set to 0 and exactly in the middle. It is not favored to one side or the other. Both channels are receiving an equal amount of signal to that track. If you turn the knob so the white hash mark is facing left, then the audio signal will pan to the left channel. If you turn the knob so the white hash mark is facing right, then the audio signal will pan to the right channel. *Tip: If you want to set a knob back to 0, press and hold Option, then click once on the knob to make it snap back to 0. Mono vs Stereo - Pro Tools 9

When you're recording tracks in your Pro Tools session, it's important to know the difference between mono and stereo. These can create differences in the overall sound that you transmit to your speakers. When you open a new track, by going to Track--New, a window will open that lets you customize the track. You can select it to be Mono or Stereo and then choose how many sides it will have. Mono When you have a monophonic, or "mono" track, this means that you are sending the same signal to both the left and right sides. There are still two separate sides, but they both produce the same sound so it comes out in the very center. They both play one signal that is combined in both sides. The signal doesn't contain different levels Stereo A stereophonic, or "stereo," track uses two independent inputs or outputs to send each signal to a separate speaker to create a dynamic sound. This allows you to replicate live music or emphasize certain instruments in a recording. A stereo track can be two mono tracks combined into one single track. For example, you can record an acoustic guitar with two microphones, one on the left and one on the right. Each microphone has a separate track but the stereo will combine them into one. So when you play the track, each signal comes from a different side. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Importing Video - Pro Tools 9

If you're working with video in your Pro Tools session, it's very important that it's synched up correctly with the audio. To begin, navigate to the top menu bar and click File -- Import -- Video. This will bring up the Finder window, where you will locate the location of the video file you would like to import and press Open. When the Video Import Options dialog box appear, choose the Location you would like to place the video file, such as at the Session Start. Pro Tools will then ask you to Choose a destination folder to create a reference copy. Audio Track Recording - Pro Tools 9

An audio track can be recorded as both mono and stereo and as completely separate tracks. Keep in mind, however, that stereo is actually two separate tracks combined together as one track. The left channel is one track while the right channel is another track. When you're recording stereo, you need two microphones to plug in together. So, you need to make sure the Inputs to your audio tracks are from your interface. When recording into Pro Tools, you need to make sure you set the Inputs correctly. The Ins and Outs can be accessed from either the left side in the edit window or in any channel strip in the mix window. Click on the small arrow and make sure you choose an option under the interface menu. On the stereo track, you'll see IN 1-2 and many other pairing options to indicate the two different interface inputs that are necessary. The same concepts relate to the Output. Another important feature to recognize is the placement of the Record Enable, Solo and Mute buttons in the edit window's audio track. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Post Production Template - Pro Tools 9

The Post Production Template is a very useful template to start out with because anything that has to do with recording requires some amount of post production. You can record on the fly, of course, but for the most part anything audio related needs some type of post production. When you open Pro Tools, the Quick Start dialog box should appear. Choose Create Session from Template and select Post Production from the drop down menu. There are a few different sub-options under Post Production and include the following: Basic 5.1 Mix (surround sound) Basic Stereo Mix (left and right channels) Basic Stereo with VO and M&E (voice over) Large Stereo TV Mix Sound FX 5.1 tracklay (surround sound, geared more for foley/sound effects) Try using a basic template such as Basic Stereo Mix and press OK. *Tip: To visually expand all of your tracks, press and hold Option on your keyboard and right-click on the left side ruler. Choose a size to view. The Basic Stereo Mix comes pre-loaded with many useful tracks, including ones for voice overs, syncs, mono use, stereo use, sound effects and music. Keep in mind that the Post Production templates are geared more for production that's related to video, so many of the template options in this category are going to have those kinds of tracks. Instrument for Track Recording - Pro Tools 9

An Instrument Track is like an audio track and a MIDI track combined into one. The track actually records MIDI data, so it's software-based, but with the added bonus of being able to control how you want to send the MIDI sounds to other effects such as reverb and delay. To record to an instrument track, you'll first need to create it. Navigate to the top menu bar and click Track -- New or press Shift+Command+N on your keyboard. In the New Tracks dialog box that appears, choose Instrument Track from the appropriate drop down menu. Press Create when you're ready. One of the benefits of using an instrument track over a MIDI track is the ability to apply both Inserts and Sends. Notice how the MIDI track in the mix window is void of inserts and sends. Click on one of the Insert or Send panels to view the various plug-in options available to choose from. The ultimate advantage of an instrument track is the ability to use software-based instruments directly inside Pro Tools and record MIDI at the same time. Compressing Kick Drum - Pro Tools 9

For the track used in this video, Joey placed a D 112 microphone inside of a kick drum. This is a very punchy type of microphone for a kick drum. He then recorded a drummer playing faster parts and less active parts. Directions Remember, every kick drum—and every recording of one—will be different. This tutorial is only a basic guideline. 1. To begin, open up your kick drum track in a Pro Tools session. Solo it out and then play it, so that you can hear what you're working with. In the video, the track has already been EQ'd, so it has more punch to it. Using compression, Joey will be able to beef it up even more. 2. Now, select the default compressor plug-in insert, opening the compressor window. You'll see the IN, OUT and GR (Gain Reduction) meters on the left, with the threshold indicated by an orange arrow. When you watch these, you can measure how hot the signal is looking. You'll also be able to see the habits of the musician, which will help you find the heavier drum parts. You'll also see the xy axis map. This shows the threshold as an orange line and the current location of the signal as a white dot. Whenever it goes past the threshold, it turns red. 3a. Though we suggest setting up your compression manually, you can always choose to go with a preset. These are located at the top of the window. Click the Preset bar, which starts out at factory default, then choose the instrument you're compressing. The knobs will automatically switch to the preset settings. 3b. To <b>...</b>

Setting The Tempo - Pro Tools 9

Setting the tempo in your Pro Tools song session allows you to control speed, or beats per minute, of your project. The tempo of a song plays an important factor in the overall mood and qualities that the song can exhibit. To change the tempo of your song, double-click on the small red arrow in the Tempo bar that runs along the timeline at the top of the edit window. This will bring up the Tempo Change dialog box in which you can set the beats per minute (BPM) to reflect any speed you want. The higher the BPM number, the faster the tempo will be. You can also create a tempo change in the middle of your song session. To do so, place the play marker at the spot in the timeline where you want the tempo change to occur. With the play marker in place, click on the small plus (+) sign next to Tempo in the top bar to the left of the edit window. This call call up the Tempo Change dialog box again. When you choose the BPM you want to set, that change will occur exactly at the part in the timeline where you placed the play marker. This change will be represented by a small musical notation with a number next to it representing the BPM. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Record MIDI Instrument Tracks - Pro Tools 9

Recording your MIDI instruments work in a similar way to recording regular audio tracks, but with slight differences. Since you're not recording a real instrument, you have a few steps to do first. 1. First, create a new instrument track in your Pro Tools session by holding Apple+Shift+N or by going to Track--New. This will open a new track window. Select Instrument Track from the dropdown menu and then click Create. The new track will be added to your session. 2. Go to the new instrument track's channel in the mixing window. This is where you can "plug in" the software instrument through an insert. To access the built-in software instruments, go to the top section of the channel under Inserts. Click on an empty box to open the menu and go to multichannel plug-in--Instrument and then select the instrument you want to use. 3. This will open a window of the software instrument, which you can play with the MIDI controller. The controller sends the signal to Pro Tools through the mix window. If you can't hear the signal, make sure the Output is sending the signal to your listening source. 4. To record the software instrument, first record enable the instrument track. Then go to the top of the transport and hit Record and then Play. This will start recording the instrument track. When you play the controller, the notes will appear on the track. Hit the space bar to stop recording. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

Single Zoom Mode - Pro Tools 9

The Zoomer Tool is located near the top left corner of the top tool bar. If you click and hold on the icon, you will be able to choose between the Normal Zoom and Single Zoom modes. With either zoom mode selected, your mouse icon will appear as a zoom tool when you hover over a track in the edit window. Click once to zoom in. With Single Zoom mode selected, you can click once to zoom in. Once the action is completed, the Zoomer Tool will no longer be selected. Single Zoom is good for one use without repeated zooming. With the Normal Zoom mode selected, however, every click of the mouse button will cause your view to zoom in more and more. You can even click and drag to select a portion of the track that you want to zoom in on. When you release the mouse button after you've chosen the specific track portion, you will zoom in on that selected area. To zoom out, press R on your keyboard.
