Link: www.smartkeitai.com QP Optoelectronics showed off their uniquely designed LightPad G1 smartphone docking accessory at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. The LightPad is essentially a keyboard dock with a built-in pico projector and screen for your Android smartphone, iPhone, and eventually BlackBerry/Windows Phone - essentially, any device with built-in HDMI-out or MHL functionality. You can either use rear projection mode with the included plastic display or flip the tiny pico projector around for front projection with a much larger image. It's the first time we're seeing such a concept come together in one package, and while it's not out just yet, it worked quite well at first glance. Of course, the quick demo we received was in a bright showroom, so we couldn't tell how it would look under more realistic, dim lighting conditions. We were told that the LightPad gets up to five hours of battery life as well. QP Optoelectronics will put the first generation LightPad into production in Q2 of 2012, and they're aiming to set retail pricing around $250 with the ultimate goal of bringing it under $200 at one point or another. Now that projector modules like Microvision's PicoP are small enough, why not embed them in cell phones next to an infrared sensor and create a virtual notebook computer? This demo uses Johnny Chung Lee's bluetooth whiteboard concept along with a ShowWX projector, wii remote, infrared pen, and some other free software. I am able to use the infrared pen with much of the same functionality as a mouse. Here are some links I needed to get this to run on my Windows Vista laptop... I used www.smoothboard.net to get a whiteboard application which would work with the necessary 848x480 resolution. This video uses the free trial version. Johnny Lee's alternative free whiteboard software can be found at http I also used www.freevirtualkeyboard.com for the keyboard. My Vista laptop comes with a Tablet PC Input Panel which also works as a virtual keyboard, but I couldn't get it to work on my split screen.
