Malika Pukhraj... 1912 - 2004

Malika Pukhraj was born in village Mirpur 16 miles from Jammu and 55 miles from Akhnoor - over looking Jammu River. She was Malika with the blessings of a "Majzoob" Baba Moti Ram and named Pukhraj by her Aunt. Her father neglected family affairs but mother insisted to get her educated. They shifted to Jammu Town where she learnt Urdu and Persian from a distant uncle Gulzar Hussain Shah. She also read Fasana-e-Azad and Ratan Nath Sarshar. She had melodious voice from childhood. She received music lessons in a Delhi sojourn from very strict Ustads. arduous "Nirith Bhav". One of her teacher has been quoted as Ustad Mubarik Ali Khan. Father of Bare Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib also nurtured her. At the age of 9 appointed at the Darbar of Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir. She remained there for nine years - performed at the coronation ceremony of the Maharaja. Maharaja was also an amateur singer. Once she laughed in Maharajas Darbar on some funny happening This being viewed as contempt and was warned by Janak Singh. Due to some intrigues she left the Kashmir State service. She had never performed publicly before that. Afterwards she was associated with Lahore Radio Station. She has a distinct and clear style of rendering Ghazals. Her tunes matched the theme. Folk singing by her is in most natural style. Her voice is most suitable for Pahari Songs. She also occasionally sings for TV. Bezubani Zuban Na Ho Jaye... Malika Pukhraj

This is Malika Pukhrajís memorable ghazal (Bezubani zuban na ho jaye,) which was brought out by HMV in the forties on a 78 RPM record. On the flip side of the disc was yet another unforgettable ghazal, Zahid na keh buri ke ye mastaney aadmi hain( link to this ghazal) . www.youtube.com It was at about the same time that Woh kehte hain ranjish ki baatein bhula dein was recorded, which has been as haunting a recording as Her eik jalwa-e-rangeen teri nigah mein hai. The one point which her critics raised persistently was that from the sixties onwards, she hardly added anything to her repertoire. She played safe by walking on tested ground ó singing her hit numbers at concerts and for the electronic media. Pukhraj was a contemporary of Begum Akhtar and though their respective styles were vastly different, they had two things in common. Their strong moorings in classical music, which lent immortality to their ghazals, and their fondness for the folk songs of their own provinces. Malika didnít leave any opportunity to praise Begum Akhtar, and one hears that the Indian singer had nothing but compliments to pay to the Pakistani exponent of ghazals and Dogri folk songs. Another passion of Malika Pukhrajís was needle work. Those who saw it or pictures of it thought she could have held many solo exhibitions of her craft. But one feels that that was too private a pursuit for her to have been exhibited.

Koonjan Udiyan Jaai Paian - Malika Pukhraj & Tahira Sayed

Malika Pukhraj may not have been in the limelight in recent years, but her fans drew comfort from the fact that she was alive and could catch a glimpse of her on TV on rare occasions. It was many years ago that the lady, sporting tinted glasses, a kind of trademark, made an appearance on our television screen singing some of her oldies. One did sometimes see her on TV giving her views on music. But now, the curtain has finally fallen on her. Malika Pukhraj has left behind a small but rich repertoire of her folk songs and ghazals. Her legacy includes Tahira Syed, her daughter, who has been so inspired by her mother that she hasn't evolved a style of her own. In other words, she is to Malika Pukhraj what Shanti Hiranand has been to the legendary Begum Akhtar. Hiranand may not have been Begum Akhtar's biological daughter, as she was childless, but she loved and cared for her Ammi as any daughter would. Shanti couldn't come out of Begum Akhtar's shadow either, and she is on record to have said that she didn't want to. Pukhraj was a contemporary of Begum Akhtar and though their respective styles were vastly different, they had two things in common. Their strong moorings in classical music, which lent immortality to their ghazals, and their fondness for the folk songs of their own provinces.
