King of Punjabi folk Alam Lohar singing Naatiya kalam from WIKIPEDIA Muhammad Alam Lohar (Urdu: محمد عالم لوہار) was a prominent Punjabi folk music singer of Pakistan.He was born in 1928 and died on July 3, 1979 in an accident. He is also the inventor of term and song Jugni. Alam Lohar developed a new style of singing the Punjabi Vaar, an epic or folk tale. He is famous for his rendition of Waris Shah's Heer, which he has memorized in 36 styles and forms. He recorded his first album at the age of 13 and has outsold all other singers in Pakistan (Verified in records kept with HMV Pakistan 1979) In his childhood he used to read sufiana kalaams, Punjabi stories and participate as a young child in local elderly gatherings expressing a vocal only art form in reading passages of great poets. It is popular in deep rural Punjab, India and Punjab, Pakistan. It is played by farmers during crop harvesting season. It can also be heard from great distances on farms along with barks of stray village dogs during dusk. It is decorated with colorful strings and is played while wearing typical punjabi farmer colorful attire. I was obsessed with it since my childhood, 15 years ago had a chance to find a teacher. My coach- Tara Chand, was a frustrated man living a hard life unable to make a living out of playing the instrument. He taught me the technique of circular breathing vital to supply continuous stream of air to two flutes. The beauty of the instrument is resonance and beats created by flutes emitting sound at different pitches. I am proud I am able to preserve the legacy. The song I was playing-Jugni is very touching. It is about an innocent village girl, who is wowed and confused when she happens to visit a city.
