Final heartbreak All eyes were on the Hungary captain going into the 1954 Final. Was he completely over his injury? Not wanting to miss the match, the pinnacle of his career to date, Puskas played despite suggestions that he was not fully fit. The Magical Magyars enjoyed a perfect start, Puskas seemingly silencing all the doubters by opening the scoring in just the sixth minute. Two minutes later it was 2-0 but in the pouring rain in Berne, West Germany responded. By the break it was 2-2, and with three minutes remaining Helmut Rahn struck the Germans' third goal. There was still time for Puskas to find the net but his effort was disallowed for offside. After 31 matches undefeated, Hungary were beaten. Following the Final, that great Hungary team gradually disintegrated and Puskas' own life was soon to change dramatically. In 1956, he travelled with Honved to Spain for a UEFA European Cup fixture against Athletic Bilbao that coincided with a period of national uprising in Hungary. Puskas and a number of his team-mates never returned home, taking sanctuary in the West. After a 15-month suspension from football, the now 31-year-old's friend Emil Oestreicher, Honved's financial secretary during his latter years at the club who had scored a job as Real Madrid's technical director, persuaded his new employers to recruit Puskas. Ferenc Puskás (April 2, 1927 -- November 17, 2006) was a Hungarian footballer and manager. He scored 84 goals in 85 internationals for Hungary, and 511 goals in 533 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues. Puskás played for Honvéd and Hungary before joining Real Madrid. During the 1950s he was both a prominent member and captain of the legendary Hungarian national team known as the Mighty Magyars.

Eurosport TV Santos star Neymar has been awarded the FIFA Puskas Award 2011 for his sensational solo strike against Flamengo, beating Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney to the prize for greatest goal of the year. The winner was decided by FIFA.com users, with more than 1.3million votes registered in the last month since the Brazilian, Argentinian and Englishman were named as the remaining contenders. After a shortlist of ten was announced last November, also featuring the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Heather O'Reilly and Giovani dos Santos, the final three were confirmed in December. Neymar's goal, scored during a nine-goal thriller in the Brazilian league in July last year, saw the highly-rated 19-year-old dribble past three defenders and complete a one-two with his team-mate before poking the ball past the goalkeeper. Despite his phenomenal effort, Neymar could not prevent his team from losing the match 5-4, but he will be consoled by claiming an award which was won by Turkish midfielder Hamit Altintop 12 months ago.
