Note:This litle video clip is taken from National Geographic's Volcano: Nature's Inferno This is a litle video clip about the vulcano Unzen in japan, that has eruption in 1991. In June 1991, while Katia and Maurice Krafft where filming eruptions at Mount Unzen, they were caught in a pyroclastic flow which unexpectedly swept out of a channel others had been flowing down and onto the ridge they were standing on. They were killed instantly, along with 41 journalists also covering the eruptions.

Many people do think that most people are killed by lava streams when there is a volcano errupting, but thats not correct. Most people do get killed by pyroclastic flows and gasses that do come with those. This video has been taken on the carribean island of Montserrat
This is a pyroclastic flow and how it forms. A pyroclastic flow is a giant avalanche of volcanic ashes and gas that sometimes will sprout from an eruption column when the upward thrust is destabilized [in the Montserrat case], from the side of a volcanic mountain that has recently collapsed [in the Mount Saint Helens case] or sometimes directly from the magma chamber itself [in the Krakatoa case] This horizontal avalanche consists of sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volcanic ash and lava boulders. It moves at up to 700 kilometers per hour, has a temperature of ~1000 degrees Celsius, and can travel up to 200 km from it's source. If it hits a large mass of water, it will not die down, but turn into a pyroclastic surge. Pyroclastic surges are similar to flows, but are less dense and usually always travel at the speed maximum. They usually only travel ten kilometers from their source, but when they hit water they create a pocket of steam underneath which maintains momentum, making it self-propelling. The Krakatoa pyroclastic surge travelled 80 kilometers until it dissipated. The fantastic song featured; Omen, by The Prodigy. A thermal infra-red video taken of a small pyroclastic flow. A slab of rock fell off from the lava dome, which can be seen glowing at the beginning of the movie. It was unclear which direction the pyroclastic flow might have been going - but then it was spotted to the western side of the volcano, on gages fan. At the end of the video the flow slowly comes towards the camera during it's end phase. Whilst the flow didn't go very far (around 2km), if it had continued in the same direction as at the end, then it would have eventually drained into the Belham River valley, at the western end of Lee's Yard. This has not happened yet during the eruption (since 1995), but with the largest lava dome ever, MVO scientists are carefully considering all possibilities.

This video has both visible and thermal content. The visible is first, followed by the thermal video which shows the distribution of heat in the flow. The temperatures are well over 400˚C. The flow originated from the summit of the lava dome and came down into the area known as Tyers ghaut. The flow then split, with some of it going into an unnamed valley to the west of Tyers. This also generated a pyroclastic surge which spread out over the slopes of upper Dyers, setting fire to trees.

Pyroclastic flow is defined on the US Geological Survey website as a ground hugging avalanche of hot gas and debris. The couliflower shaped debris clouds observed during the collapse of the WTC buildings on 09/11/01 were telltale signs of a pyroclastic flow. These phenomenon are typically visible only during volcanic eruptions and controlled demolition of buildings.

------- READ DESCRIPTION ------- The volcano on the island of El Hierro has erupted magma and ejected just two miles from the coast, according to Álgela Alcover, TVE. The council has confirmed the news and says there is no risk of explosion. However, the authorities have asked TVE team leave the area for safety. They are evicting residents of La Restinga and have asked the research vessel to return to port. The appearance on the sea surface from a mixture of gases and magma, known as pyroclastic flows, has forced the closure of the entrances to the port of La Restinga and the prohibition of flying helicopters and airplanes in the area. As reported in a press conference the Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Santana, the underwater eruption is now less than 150 meters deep, so it increases the possibility of occurrence of explosive events, but not risk to the public, after the eviction restricts it. The authorities have decided to raise an alert level volcanism, which is already under emergency 1.

So one must conclude something else, and the closest comparison is that of a underground nuclear detonation.
