Sometimes the bottoms of the quaich are made of glass, allegedly so that the drinker could keep watch on his companions. A more romantic quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair so that the owner could drink from his quaich to his lady love, and, in 1589, King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Denmark a quaich or "loving cup" as a wedding gift.

This is an introduction to the Quaich Society. Quaich is a word for a cup for drinking whisky. Every other Thursday someone from a distillery or someone who writes about whisky gives a presentation and tasting at the Scores Hotel in St Andrews. Typically you get to taste about 5 different whiskies. It's open to St Andrews University students and the general public.
