Uthaya, 108 others arrested to quash HRP rally
By about 11.45am, the crowd had swelled to a procession of about 200 moving towards the contingent police headquarters. Water cannon and other Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks were seen on standby at the headquarters. The North American auto industry has long used questionable advertising practices in successfully growing their now plummeting sales figures. Unfortunately they spent more time and money trying to con us into buying new versions of already antiquated cars and trucks, than they did designing the vehicles that might have carried us further into the 21st century, and beyond. Back in '98, when they attacked the integrity, reliability and even the sanity of the hardest working members of the urban active transport industry, they did so at the expense of the environment. GENERAL MOTORS actions leave no doubt about the fact that the now-ailing company cared more about its own bottom line, than it did about the health and welfare of its customers, its employees, its shareholders or even the very planet that we all must live on. This questionable ad aired for months before it was 'voluntarily' removed from public view for demeaning an identifiable occupational group. (Nothing was done to repair the further damage done to the bikers' already fragile public image.) Advertising Standards Canada, a self-policing ad industry body, didn't care about the environmental sedition aspect, at all. The even worse news is that one of the few independent media tools that did get the news out from Egypt is being threatened in a place you might least expect it — the supposed free speech leader of the world, the United States. As you might expect, members of the independent media spoken to by The UpTake at the National Conference For Media Reform generally had low opinions of the corporate-owned media. Democracy Now's Amy Goodman said in Egypt corporate media looked "like they were under the covers in their hotel room with a lower third that said 'reporting from an undisclosed location'" while independent media was broadcasting out in the open to the masses. Free Speech TV's Don Rojas faults the corporate media for reinforcing the false concept of "objective" reporting. What the corporate-owned media really offers, Rojas says, is a corporate view of the news, which is hardly objective.
