WNYC Radiolab Podcast: Voices In Your Head

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THIS! Jad talks to Charles Fernyhough about the connection between thought, inner speech, and the voice in our heads. In our last episode, Words, we got into a debate about whether kids can think before they have words. For this podcast, Jad revisits that question with Charles Fernyhough, who tells Jad about a theory developed by a Russian psychologist name Lev Vygotsky. Vygotsky's theory describes how words and thoughts move from speech outside our heads to speech inside our heads. We also talk to someone who hears other people's voices in his head, and ask Fernyhough about whether Vygotsky's ideas could shed light on this surprisingly common phenomena. If you want to read more about voice-hearing and schizophrenia, check out the study that Fernyhough mentioned in this podcast.

Radiolab - Sagan Love

A clip from the Radiolab episode "Space": a beautiful story told by Ann Druyan, Carl Sagan's wife from 1981 to his death in 1996, about how the two met while working on the Voyager record. That piece of metal is currently taking a bundle of human culture and Druyan's brainwaves into interstellar space at 35790 miles per hour. All credit to WNYC and Radiolab.

Gravitational Anarchy (Radio Lab Excerpt)

An excerpt from the radio broadcast Radio Lab called "Gravitational Anarchy". I had the same thing happened to me last summer. It was hard to describe what was happening to me, and to explain how much of a mystery it was to diagnose. People thought I was going insane. I was amazed when I heard this on the radio.

"Musical DNA" segment from NPR Radio Lab program

"Musical DNA" segment from NPR Radio Lab program Which came first: Language or Music? We're still not sure, but now we'll ponder what comes next. Producer Jonathan Mitchell brings us a piece about David Cope, the composer and professor at UC Santa Cruz, who cured his artist's block by writing a computer program to do the dirtywork for him. His program, named EMI (Experiments in Musical Intelligence), deconstructs the works of great composers, finding patterns within the voice leading of their compositions, and then creates brand new compositions based on the patterns she finds. But it's not just copy and paste. She brings something new to the pieces. Drift along to the eerily enchanting music of EMI Mahler and ask yourself this: What would Mahler think of an EMI Mahler score? Brillant music? A forgery? ~ WNYC RadioLab (www.wnyc.org If you'd like to hear any more compositions by David Cope's computer EMI (and there are hundreds!) visit you can visit his website artsites.ucsc.edu and there you will find EMI Bach, EMI Chopin, EMI Scott Joplin, EMI Mahler and even EMI Navajo music!

Radiolab - Transcendence

This is a project I put together as a tribute for Radiolab, the podcast. The soundtrack is comprised of particularly powerful and transcendent moments from Radiolab that really gets you to think about the world around you, and the moments that make up your everyday. The photos you see are primarily from National Geographic, and attempt to paint a picture of the sounds you are hearing. Enjoy!

WNYC Radiolab Podcast: After Birth

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THIS! Pardon the graphic pun, but hey! For this podcast, Jad--a brand new father--wonders what's going on inside the head of his baby Amil. (And don't worry, you don't need kids to enjoy this podcast.) The questions here are big: what is it like to be so brand new to the world? None of us have memories from this time, so how could we possibly ever know? Is it just chaos? Or, is there something more, some understanding from the very beginning? Jad found a development psychologist named Charles Fernyhough to explore some of his questions.
