Scott Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag

Update: ONE MILLION VIEWS!!! My 2nd video to hit this mark. Thanks everyone! (11/7/10) Hi everyone, this is a re-recording of the maple leaf rag with less audio distortion. I hope that made it better. Unfortunately all your kind comments and ratings are gone, sorry! About the speed: I strived to play it at this specific speed and I think it is appropriate and not excessive. Of course, you're entitled to have your own opinion though. This piece was learned and recorded in 14 days :) sheets available at sheetmusicarchive.net
Doc Watson - 1991 - Black Mountain Rag

Doc Watson - 1991 - Black Mountain Rag. I've included Doc's introduction and explanation of his background with this particular tune. I've always loved the interesting anecdote that Doc developed his now legendary flatpicking style while playing a Les Paul (electric solid body guitar) while he was playing in a Rockabilly band in the 1950's. Additionally, I've heard that he actually didn't even own an acoustic guitar at that time. It's interesting that this style has since become associated with, nearly exclusively, acoustic guitars, particularly Martin dreadnoughts. I've always wondered what kind of reception a picker would get at the National Flatpicking Contest in Winfield Kansas if he were to show up to compete with a Les Paul in hand!

Billy Joel - Root Beer Rag 1978

I think this song best defines Billy Joel and what a master he is at the piano. I have the sheet music for this song and it is extremely difficult to play... I wonder how hard it was for him to make it up in the first place! Anyhow, it's a wonderful song. Leave comments and subscribe! I DO NOT OWN THIS SONG OR VIDEO. -mission2marsden-

Bob Wills - Steel Guitar Rag 1936

Bob Wills was born in Kosse, Texas in 1905. In 1929 he started the Wills Fiddle Boys in Ft. Worth, then came to the attention of perennial Texas Gubernatorial candidate Pappy Lee O'Daniel who ran the Light Crust Flour Mills in Saginaw, Texas just north of Ft. Worth. Wills lept to fame playing as the Light Crust Doughboys but after several years the band tired of the gig as they were also expected to load flour trucks during the day. In '34 the band moved to Tulsa to get away from Pappy Lee and formed the Texas Playboys. They invented western music with a jazz beat known as Western Swing. Some of his music was dead-on jazz while other songs were straight western-his genre was hard to pin down. On clear channel 50000 watt KVOO in Tulsa The Playboys broadcast from Cain's Ballroom on North Mainand they played it all. In 1968 Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as the King of Western Swing- and as Willie Nelson crooned-he's still the King. Wills died in Tulsa in 1975. Leon McAuliffe, his steel guitar player featured on this record, was born in Houston, Texas in 1917. He played with Bob Wills band until WWII and after the war formed his own group in Tulsa.

Dutch Swing College Band - Tiger Rag

Dutch Swing College Band - Tiger Rag Burghausen (Germany), 2007 March 17 A popular saying goes: "There are two kinds of music, good music and bad music". For the true fan of good traditional jazz music the choice is simple, because there is only one Dutch Swing College Band. The Dutch Swing College Band started out as an amateur-college combo on liberation day (1945, may 5th) and through the years it has grown into a worldfamous jazz ensemble that has toured all five continents to much acclaim. The DSC played a prominent role during the post-war period. At the time many youngsters fell under the spell of the original Amerian music: jazz. The band, which has existed for more than sixty years, has given concerts all over the world and the sounds have been registered on practically all types of sound recordings since 1945. The band also appeared frequently on TV and in film productions. Through the years many big names in jazz music were backed by the DSC, from Sidney Bechet, Joe Venuti and Rita Reys to Teddy Wilson. The expression "The Haque School" was born out of the big influence of the DSC on the Dutch jazz scene. Deservedly many jazz fans consider the DSC almost as an institution. Fortunately, the Dutch Swing College Band has never presented itself as a show or glitter orchestra. The musicians have always succeeded in capturing the public's attention with their excellent jazz performances. Cheap show tricks were absolutely out of the question. In 1960, the DSC turned ...

Super Mario Athlete's Rag Air Platform sight-read; Tom Brier

If you've seen my other videos of Tom sight-reading videogame ragtime sheet music that I've put in front of him, this video should come as no surprise to you. I had not yet finished correcting the awful score that is available online for this tune (I did put it into the correct time signature, but it still has some really funky chords and other problems), nevertheless I put a copy of it as it stands in front of my amazingly talented friend Tom Brier this weekend. This was the result. Tom is a highly regarded pianist and sight-reader in the ragtime community. I have other videos of him you can find (and more to come) which will give you an idea why. There are so many amateur pianists out there playing these rags from video games, but I thought it would be nice to see what a pianist who specializes in ragtime music would make of them. This tune is by Koji Kondo (近藤浩治) and is one of the most famous tunes of all music from Nintendo video games. I still haven't cleaned up the score completely. Here it is as Tom was reading it -- no repeats, some questionable chords, etc. www.keeper1st.com

Piano Animation (Maple Leaf Rag)

An animation of balls playing Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag on a piano, done in 3Dsmax. Except for the camera movement, the animation is done entirely with scripts. I had to guesstimate when the notes in the audio file occurred in time, so sometimes the movement of balls is not perfectly timed to the audio.

12th Street Rag

This selection along with 19 others are on a DVD / CD Box set which is now available for purchase at www.TexasTalkies.com The McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in McKinney, Texas was "rocked" by a unique and new musical program on September 8, 2007. The North Texas Chapter (NTC) of the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS) presented two world class artists in their first formal collaboration. The "Red White & Blue Ragtime Revue" featured famed theatre organist, Dave Wickerham at the console of the MPAC Mighty Wurlitzer (3/17) and acclaimed ragtime pianist Dick Kroeckel at the Steinway (Boston) Grand Piano. Dave and Dick discovered each other at impromptu jam sessions in Colorado and Wichita, KS. The duo quickly realized that they had something special. When NTC's show producer, Rick Mathews heard the duo "having lots of fun" at the Little River Studio in suburban Wichita, he immediately approached the two artists to perform a show for the NTC in a scheduled September concert slot. Dave and Dick, after some quick discussions and checking of calendars, agreed to the show and the date. The jam sessions were wonderful, but the show was nothing less than incredible. Not only was the music a feast for the ears, but the combined stage presence of the two and their banter between themselves and the audience, made for a show that the audience wished never would conclude. Dave and Dick were having such a good time that they were having difficulty trying to keep the show to a ...
