"In my business of managing natural resources and livestock, every day is Earth Day," says Leo Barthelmess, Jr. a Malta, Montana area rancher and a leader of the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance. Partnering with diverse interests including the Natural Resources and Conservation Service, Environmental Defense Fund, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance is helping ranchers in South Phillips County, Montana sustain and enhance habitat for grassland birds, sage grouse and pronghorn antelope. The group's projects harness the generational wisdom and thrift of prairie ranchers, in tandem with the knowledge and resources of environmental agencies and nonprofits, for the lasting benefit of the wildlife, grasslands, people and communities of the northern prairies. The Montana Stockgrowers Association named RSA winners of the 2010 Montana Environmental Stewardship Award and traveled to South Phillips County in April 2010 to learn more about how these ranchers protect the environment every day.
