The University of Pennsylvania's premiere classical Indian dance troupe presents its 2011 show "Adharma- the 7 Deadly Sins." We explore the eastern concept of sin as it pertains to various Hindu mythological stories. In this dance, we present lust through the story in the Ramayan: Ravan and Sita.: This piece explores the destructive nature of lust as it appears in the Ramayan. The piece opens with Ram hopelessly searching for Sita; however, Ravan has already whisked her away to his kingdom of Lanka, where he imprisons her in a garden that is guarded by demons. He fruitlessly tries to coerce Sita into marriage, but her resilience and rejection frustrates him. He is further angered that he cannot even touch Sita, for her purity burns him. Later, Sita dreams of her memories with Ram, playing the veena for him and making a flower garland for him. However, her dream is interrupted by Ravan, who becomes infuriated upon seeing Sita's own desire for Ram. Ravan's lust for Sita drives him nearly insane; during Ravan's last attempt to marry Sita, Ram arrives in Lanka and ultimately defeats Ravan with his bow and arrow. Sita and Ram are crowned queen and king of Ayodhya; however as Sita stands over Ravan's body, she realizes her ultimate role in Ravan's downfall. Join us as we portray the desire, destruction, and regret wrought by lust in the epic tale of the Ramayan.
