Inti Raymi - Festival of the Sun - Cusco, Peru - Incan Dance Spectacle

The Inti Raymi ("Festival of the Sun") was a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti. Since 1944, an historical reconstruction of the Inti Raymi has been taking place at the ruins of Sacsayhuamán (two km. from Cusco) on June 24 of each year, attracting thousands of tourists and local visitors. Coya Raymi is an annual festivity of the Quichua Indians of the province of Imbabura. It celebrates women, fecundity and corn production. One of the many activities of this fiesta, which takes place during the month of September, is a race of caballitos de Totora (canoes made out of reed) in the Lake San Pablo. The Inti Raymi symbolizes the eternal consecration of marriage between the Sun and his sons, the human beings. The Inti Raymi ("Festival of the Sun") was a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti. It also marked the winter solstice and a new year in the Andes of the Southern Hemisphere. Since 1944, a theatrical representation of the Inti Raymi has been taking place at Sacsayhuamán (two km. from Cusco) on June 24 of each year, attracting thousands of tourists and local visitors. In the ancient capital city of Cuzco, the Incas dedicated the most magnificent monument of their vast empire to the sun god. Covered with sheets of gold, the temple of Coricancha was as impressive as the deity for whom it was built. Over a dozen people meet up every weekend in Parc de la Trinitat to join in the traditional dances of this South American country. They are members of the folkloric dance troupe from the Taller Ecuatoriano de Arte y Cultura de Barcelona (Ecuadorian Barcelona Art and Culture Workshop), famous for being the most representative group in Catalonia. Nora Caizapanta, the association's general coordinator, shares some of the most ancient cultural manifestations of this Andean people with us, a people who have such a strong presence in our city today.
