rComplex is designed to keep the player on their toes. It is also important to note that there is a strong focus on management. In the original rComplex the player is not only required to dodge obstacles while constantly on the move but also required to manage ammo usage as well. If the player fails to ration their ammo efficiently, despite successfully dodging all obstacles, their chance of surviving the perpetually approaching "darkness" becomes slim to none. What is the rComplex? Indie film based on indie game, rComplex, is a collaboration between Zenithfilms and Rekcahdam to create a short film based on the ideas and style found within the PC game of the same name. For me it was the chance to work on someone else's project and to use their unique style in my own way; to create a short film that doesn't just use the name of the game, but is part and partial to the game. rComplex is a short, simple game in which you try to escape a giant 'thing' that's chasing you. The game starts with the silhouette protagonist running, closely followed by tentacles. You control jumps, slides and gunshots. Running is automatic, so it's a case of timing jumps and slides while shooting at the 'thing' when it gets too close. You only have 12 bullets, so you have to ration your shots.
With the plethora of games that started life out as Flash games that were then converted to iOS games, rComplex is one of the best. This game has you running for your life, not endlessly, with a set goal in mind and with a huge mass of tentacles wanting to strangle the life out of you. Luckily, you have a shotgun and a scythe that will protect you. For only $1.99 for an universal game, I have to say I did get my monies worth even though the game is rather hard. Indie Darling rComplex was released as a short PC game in 2009. The creators, Roger Hicks and Brian Terwilliger of EVENT Games, went to Kickstarter.com to raise funds for an iOS, droid, PC and MAC versions. 2 plus years later, the team (InterWave) that brought you last year's indie hit Nuclear Dawn (FPS w/ RTS) and EVENT Games are proud to announce a completely reimagined rComplex. rComplex will launch at the end of February 2012 on the iTunes App Store. The R-complex is named for the most advanced part of the brain higher mammals share with reptiles. It is responsible for rage and basic survival fight-or-flight responses. A well developed and healthy neo-cortex can monitor R-Complex activity in sentient beings.
