Relativism (1 of 7)

Are you often confronted with the "Who are you to say" questions? "Who are you to say that your religion is right?" "Who are you to say I'm wrong?" What is the fallacy behind these types of questions and how can you be prepared to respond. Greg Koukl and Francis Beckwith offer cogent defenses for the concept of absolute truth against the fallacy of moral relativism. Table of Contents: www.youtube.com

Dawkins' take on Relativism and Science

Excerpt from the documentary mini-series by Richard Dawkins: "The Genius of Charles Darwin." 2008 Dawkins builds to the point that just because you have several "versions" of history, does not mean they are each inherently equal in validity. Best part of the series, in my opinion. If just for the lines "Science works. Planes fly. Magic carpets and broomsticks don't. Gravity's not a version of the truth. It *is* the truth. Anyone who doubts it is invited to jump out of a tenth floor window."

Living with Relativism

Philosopher Jesse Prinz, distinguished professor of philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York discusses "Living with Relativism: Can We Find a Common Good in a Morally Diverse World?" as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum on The Common Good. He examines the nature of the concept of good and argues that it cannot be expressed simply as a set of objective standards or a projection of individual preferences, but rather exists as a combination of the two. Ethical Relativism

Ethical Relativism. Randall Niles examines surviving standards of ethics and morality, relatively speaking. What is ethical relativism? Relativism is the position that all points of view are equally valid and the individual determines what is true and relative for them. Relativism theorizes that truth is different for different people, not simply that different people believe different things to be true. While there are relativists in science and mathematics, ethical relativism is the most common variety of relativism. Almost everyone has heard a relativist slogan: Whats right for you may not be whats right for me. Whats right for my culture wont necessarily be whats right for your culture. No moral principles are true for all people at all times and in all places. Ethical relativism represents the position that there are no moral absolutes, no moral right or wrong. This position would assert that our morals evolve and change with social norms over a period of time. This philosophy allows people to mutate ethically as the culture, knowledge, and technology change in society. Slavery is a good example of ethical relativism. Repeatedly the value of a human being is determined by a combination of social preferences and patterns, experience, emotions, and rules that seemed to bring about the most benefit. What is ethical relativism from a subjective view? Subjective ethical relativism supports the view that the truth of moral principles is relative to individuals. Whatever ...

Moral Relativism

Moral Relativism. Randall Niles looks at Hamlet, who said, "There is Nothing Either Good or Bad, but Thinking Makes it So." Yes indeed, in Hamlet, William Shakespeare declares: "There is nothing either good nor bad but thinking makes it so." This also seems to be the mantra of the day: There is no universal right and there is no universal wrong. Morality is relative to the person and place in which it is applied. You might have heard someone say, theres no right and theres no wrong, but you have to ask yourself, is their statement right or wrong? And Im sure youve heard someone say, Its wrong for you to impose your morals on me! But if you think about it, by them telling you that something is wrong, they are imposing their morals on you! How about this one There is no such thing as absolute truth. I must be snippy and ask, Are you absolutely sure about your absolute statement? The fact is, we all inherently know right from wrong; we just have this crazy tendency to disregard morality when it conflicts with our desire for personal pleasure or personal gain. Sure, we might justify having an affair, but we certainly wouldnt condone our spouse cheating on us. And we might justify taking something without permission, but if we were the ones being robbed we wouldnt think it was OK. Simply, there isnt a person alive today who would come home from work to discover that their house has been robbed, their dog murdered, and their child kidnapped, and say, Oh, how wonderful that this ...

Europe without Christianity: - Relativism, Atheism and Islam

While Christianity is still very relevant in the United States, and is exploding in the developing world, Europe today has sunk below unbelief, and is now labeled "Christophobic" and "anti-religious." ooo OOO ooo Decline and Fall: Europe's Slow Motion Suicide, by Bruce S. Thornton It used to be said that when it came to worldviews, Americans were from Mars and Europeans were from Venus. But a new school of thought posits a different role for our continental counterparts. Europe, in this schema, is more like a dying star: a once-brilliant civilization whose best days lie behind it, that has lost the internal strength to endure, and that is headed toward oblivion. Bruce Thornton, a classics professor at California State University, is the latest to take up this thesis. In Decline and Fall, he makes the case that a number of factors—including unsustainable welfare states, dwindling birthrates, undiscriminating immigration laws, a society disconnected from the transcendent truths of Christianity, and a failure to confront the gathering threat of Islamic jihadism aggressively—are leading Europe to commit "slow-motion suicide." Government largesse may seem an unlikely source of civilizational decline, but Thornton shows that it is indeed cause for concern. A massive influx of immigrants from the Middle East, unassimilated into European society, contributes little to economic growth. Meanwhile, tax receipts, required to sustain social-welfare benefits, may dry up as Europe ages ...

Neurological Relativism and Time-binding

An interview with Robert Anton Wilson All of the following information in this description was taken from: time-binding.org Time-binding: 1. Only humans have demonstrated the capability to build on the knowledge of prior generations. 2. Alfred Korzybski referred to this capability as time-binding. Language serves as the principle tool that facilitates time-binding. 3. Time-binding forms the basis for an ethical standard by which to evaluate human behavior; does the behavior advance time-binding and human progress based on what is known at the time, or does it deny time-binding? 4. Acknowledging our time-binding inheritance dispels us of the "self-made" notion; as we understand how much we owe to others, we begin to understand our own limitations. Abstracting and Evaluating ("Behavior Awareness"): 1. Our awareness of "what goes on" outside of our skin, is not "what is going on"; our awareness of our experience is not the silent, first-order, neurological experience. 2. As human organisms, we have limits as to what we can experience through our senses. Given these limitations, we can never experience 'all' of what's 'out there' to experience. 3. Given our ever-changing environment (which includes ourselves, and our awareness of ourselves), we never experience the 'same' person, event, situation, 'thing', experience, etc., more than once. 4. To the degree that our reactions and responses to all forms of stimuli are automatic, or conditioned, we copy animals, like Pavlov's ...

John Piper - Relativism Leads To Brutal Totalitarianism

The speech by Michael Novak can be found at: www.firstthings.com Matthew 5:33-37 (ESV) Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn. But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply Yes or No; anything more than this comes from evil. John 8:31 (ESV) So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Isaiah 53:6 (ESV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. The Lies Called "Post-Modernism"/Relativism and Tolerance

Have you ever had someone tell you, "Hey, you have your truth and I have mine. There is no such thing as absolute truth."? At that point you should then ask them, "Is what you've just said, 'there is no absolute truth' absolutely true?" They may say, "Well, I'm just saying that we can't be completely sure about anything." You should then ask, "Are you completely sure that we can't be completely sure about anything?" Then they may say, "Ok, ok... You're not right because we can't know that anything is right or wrong. That's all I'm saying. It's all relative." You should then say, "Is what you're saying, 'You're not right because we can't know if anything is right or wrong' ...right?" Behold, the essence of "post-modernism" or relativism as it's also so called. Here's basically what the philosophy stands for: Self-refutuation. It's a walking contradiction, and it's a lie. When someone says that we can't know if anything is absolutely true, tell them that they are lying and remind them what one is called who tells lies. Of course they will get mad, but anyone who doesn't love truth and says we can't really know what truth is, is opposed to the One who is the Truth, the Way, and the Life and those who believe in Him. www.crosstv.com

Moral Relativism

Opening sequence from the film "The Addiction" by Abel Ferrara. Using the traditional mythos of Vampirism, with a William S. Burroughs - Poppy Z. Bright subtext of Heroin elitism, Ferrara exposes the core philosophy of the psychopathic power-driven oligarchy that thrives on the fear of its subjects. Power, control, and the violence of their will are both the methods and goals of the Immoral Force they substitute for Torah law. While perhaps not intended, the film provides a great deal of insight into Post Modern Feminist philosophy and rhetoric, its historical precedents, and its relationship to social Darwinism and nihilistic existentialism. If you've ever wondered why the PoMoFem, Relativistic, Derridian, Obamamaniacal Peace Studies crowd supports a certain form of religious terrorism that can't be named anymore for fear of censorship and possible retaliation, this film will help you understand. More importantly, it will teach you to say NO!

Moral Relativism is Evil

Atheists make no distinction between what right and wrong "is" (does right and wrong exist), and what "is" right and wrong (the actions that are deemed right and wrong). According to atheism, right and wrong exist entirely within the actions of those doing what society deems "right and wrong", without justifying why we should believe the society has the right establish "rightness" and "wrongness" as actual reality. Why should we believe "right" and "wrong" actually exist, if they only come into existence once a society is formed? How does the society then know and determine right or wrong, if right and wrong do not exist until the society decides what is right and wrong? If the decision to deem something right or wrong depends entirely on how well it helps the society survive, how does one determine if the survival of the society is itself right or wrong? Who can objectively say the society is right or wrong in anything it does, including its deeming of right and wrong? If no one is in a position to judge the society, then the society is neither right or wrong, and therefore neither are its decisions regarding right and wrong. It follows then right and wrong do not exist, contrary to popular belief by both atheists and theists alike. Right and wrong must exist as an external reality apart from man's constantly changing ideals of what is right and wrong. Differing societies often have differing views of right and wrong, but in order to conclude who is actually correct ...

Postmodernism - Postmodern Worldview

Postmodernism. The Postmodern Worldview is difficult to define, because to define it would violate the postmodernist's premise that no definite terms, boundaries, or absolute truths exist. In this article, the term postmodernism will remain vague, since those who claim to be postmodernists have varying beliefs and opinions on issues. Are nationalism, politics, religion, and war the result of a primitive human mentality? Is truth an illusion? How can Christianity claim primacy or dictate morals? The list of concerns goes on and on especially for those affected by a postmodern philosophy and lifestyle. For some, the questions stem from lost confidence in a corrupt Western world. For others, freedom from traditional authority is the issue. Their concern centers around the Wests continued reliance on ancient and traditional religious morals, nationalism, capitalism, inept political systems, and unwise use and adverse impact of promoting trade offs between energy resources and environment, for economic gain. To the postmodernist, the Western world society is an outdated lifestyle disguised under impersonal and faceless bureaucracies. The postmodernist endlessly debates the modernist about the Western society needing to move beyond their primitiveness of ancient traditional thought and practices.
