Six-relay team performing for you "Lord of the Dance" style. These are six large, loud 12V relays driven by ULN2003 darlingtons and programmed using a Basic Stamp 2. The relays are plugged into sockets screwed into wood planks. Under each relay is a 12V dashboard illumination bulb switched by the relay contacts. The program is amazingly simple: Repeatedly count from 0 to 63, XOR a random number with most of the bits, and switch the relays using the 6 LSB bits. The timing between each beat is varied randomly to make it sound more human. (Full program at bottom.) Other Tid-Bits: - When everything's on, it draws 1.8A. The Penn Relays (also Penn Relays Carnival) is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, hosted annually since April 21, 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The DUO 14 Premium is a 2 bit relay computer I designed and built for fun. The clicking sound you hear is made by the relays, which are the switching elements of the computer. The computer has 48 bits of ROM and 14 bits of RAM, and can execute a program containing 8 simple commands. Here I show 2 other example programs which run on the computer. One tests to see if 2 numbers inputted are equal, then outputs a set of lights if they are, otherwise it does not. As a bonus, you can continue to test numbers without resetting the computer. The other program will toggle a set of lights on and off each time an input signal is given. This second program is actually the one I give as an example on my site. After the first two 200m legs, Schillonie Calvert and Kerron Stewart had Jamaica in first while Natasha Hastings and Dee Dee Trotter had USA Blue second. The 4 x 400m Relays at the 1993 Athletics World Championships hosted in Stuttgart Germany were both won by Team USA in two of the fastest times ever. On the women's side Gwen Torrence led off the American team with a sub 50 second clocking. Up next was Maicel Malone-Wallace and her sub 50 second split. She handed off to silver medalist Natasha Kaiser-Brown (not Kaiser Sose as Chris Berman would call her!), who promptly ran a low 49 point leg. On anchor was 1993 400m world champion Jearl Miles (pre Miles-Clark days). Miles blasted a 48.8 split to bring the team home in 3:16.71. On the men's side Andrew Vallmon ran sub 45 from the blocks before handing off to 1992 Olympic gold medalist Quincy Watts. Watts ran low 44 before passing to world record holder Butch Reynolds. Reynolds ran a very impressive 43.2, but would not even run the fastest split of the day as he exchanged the baton to Michael Johnson. Johnson proceeded to light up the track with an amazing 42.9 solo split. The Americans demolished the field to set the still standing world record of 2:54.29. You have to be careful with relays, since you are essentially creating a current source. Just like you would never short a voltage source, you would never want to "open" a current source. I'm working on constructing a computer using relays. This video shows the first three cards in operation. The top card is the adder/incrementer, the second is logical and ALU control, and the bottom one holds 4 x 8-bit registers. Red lights are data bits, blue are control lines. The control lines are driven by a PC through the smaller relays on the small card at the very top. This first experimental cicuit iteratively increments the value in the "A" register (the row of LEDs at the top-left of lower card). The operation is as follows: 1) Select increment operation of ALU (shown by blue LED on the top card) and select A register as input. A+1 appears on data bus. 2). Store data bus in B register (bottom row of LEDs on bottom card). 3). Load B register onto data bus. 4). Store data bus in A register. 5). Repeat from 1. Watch the binary value of the bottom LED rows increase by one and enjoy the beautiful sound of the relays clicking! My intention is to extend this into a complete, micro-programmable CPU.
