Rebetiko-Kostas Ferris (fragment)

Rebetiko-fragment "When a man is born, a pain is born alongside when the war is at its' peak the blood cannot be counted I'm burning, I'm burning throw more oil in the fire I'm drowning, I'm drowning throw me in a sea that's deep. I swore in your eyes which for me were like the Evangelium the knife-cut you gave me I'd turn for you into laughter..." Thanks to "fantasmadellaopera" for the translation of this song

REMBETIKO

Excerpt from the film REMBETIKO. After winning the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1984, Costas Ferris' evocative film sparked a rediscovery of rembetika music, a form of urban Greek expression akin to American blues in its passionate, soulful delivery and its associations with the plight of the poor and marginalized. The film follows a Greek singer's remarkable career from the backstreet taverns of Piraeas to the nightclubs of New York. Award-winning Greek actress Sotiria Leonardou stars as Marika, a singer whose family immigrated to Greece from Smyrna, where rembetika has its musical roots. Rembetiko is enchanting yet melancholy, stark but smoldering--much like the music itself. "The film's sound is as rich as its color" (Los Angeles Times). In Greek with English subtitles. Rembetiko (English Subtitles) exiled derbederis

Infatuated by Adrianna, Thomas opens a teke, (hashish den, also known as a bouzouki) in Piraeus and hires Panagis to sing. The angry, disillusioned Turko/Greeks give birth to Rebetika music and a criminal underground drug culture. Though Panagis is a brute, he's also a man with his own sorrows. Once a dapper bandleader in western Asia minor, now he's with the rest of the refugees in a waterfront dive. He sings the songs his fellow refugees relate to, and becomes one of the original, true derbederis. In this film, this is Panagis finest moment, and he defines the lifestyle of those who follow. Available on DVD through www.umbrellaent.com.au Buy it here: www.umbrellaent.com.au Rembetiko is a passionate exploration of rembetika music: a form of urban blues that expresses the history and depth of Greek culture. The film mirrors the music's style, offering a glimpse into that culture through a heart-wrenching story written and directed by Costas Ferris and a haunting original score written by Stavros Xarhakos. Rembetiko charts the tragic true story of one of Greece's most popular rembetiko singers, Marika Ninou (Sotiria Leonardou): her professional successes and personal disasters. Her rise as a singer is shadowed by key moments in Greek history from such as the Nazi occupation and the CivilWar. Her life is full of torment, and her pain is evident in her singing. Marika Ninou is as cherished in Greece as Edith Piaf is in France. This is her vie en rose. Rembetiko is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Silver Bear at the 1984 Berlin Film

This is a remix of one of my favorite old Greek "Rembetiko" songs, by the singer Perpiniadis. I learned to play it on the Tzoura a few years ago, and then fliped it up with some editing and mixing in Cubase to give it a more contemporary feeling. Someone on a Bouzouki forum once told me it sounds spastic LOL. Kamilieriko beat 9/8, palyed one the D (Re) Sabah scale (Dromos). Peace! 9 - Rembetiko - Alkeos Souyoul & John Dafnos

Anatoli and The Boys - wonderful Greek rembetiko music featuring the world class bouzouki playing of Alkeos Souyoul. Live at Jerry's Elliniko, Katelios, Kefalonia, Greece, August 2010. Recorded on Phil Yorke's iPhone. Unfortunately, there is a lot of camera phone movement in the middle whilst the phone was propped up on salt and pepper pots, and some drunken chat whilst we discussed it. All of this is during some wonderful playing by Alkeos so I haven't edited it out. Sorry about that. The other 8 videos in this series are stable.

REMBETIKO
