Haley Reinhart performance "The House of the Rising Sun" (The Animals). Current + 60s songs week (2 songs each contestant). All the judges gave a standing ovation, and called the performance "the best of the night". www.americanidol.com "The House of the Rising Sun" is a folk song from the United States. Also called "House of the Rising Sun" or occasionally "Rising Sun Blues", it tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans. The most successful commercial version was recorded by the English rock group The Animals in 1964, which was a number one hit in the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland and Canada. Like many classic folk ballads, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is unknown. Some musicologists believe it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads such as the "Unfortunate Rake" of the 18th century which were taken to America by early settlers. Many of these had the theme of "if only" and after a period of evolution, they emerge as American songs like "Streets of Laredo". Alan Price of The Animals has claimed that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting. The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster and was made in 1933. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley. "What Is and What Should Never Be" was Haley's song choice. (1st of 3 for each contestant). Her Dad, Harry, accompanied Haley on stage, playing lead guitar. As she was returning to the stage (after circling the judges table), Haley tripped up the steps, and fell down. When asked by Ryan Seacrest, all the judges said that Haley won round 1 "hands down". It's a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin on their 1969 album Led Zeppelin II. It was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. This was one of the first songs on which Page used his soon-to-become trademark Gibson Les Paul for recording. This was also one of the first songs recorded by the band for which Robert Plant received writing credit. According to rock journalist Stephen Davis, the author of the Led Zeppelin biography Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga, the lyrics for this song reflect a romance Plant had with his wife's younger sister. With jazz a great influence in Haley's musical background, performing a duet with Tony Bennett was a perfect match. "Steppin' Out With My Baby" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin and introduced in the 1948 musical film Easter Parade. There it was sung by Fred Astaire as part of a dance number involving Astaire on stairs and three different dance partners. Since then the song has been recorded and performed by several artists, most notably Tony Bennett, in whose treatment it has become a jazz standard. Introduced as the title song on his 1993 Astaire-themed album Steppin' Out, a stylish music video for it garnered some MTV airplay and was part of Bennett's commercial resurgence at the time. In concert Bennett often turns the song into an instrumental showcase for his band and for his own jazz-influenced singing style, varying the dynamic between the soft, semi-scat patter and a loud, soaring finish. One such performance was included on his high-selling 1994 MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett album. Later Bennett recorded it as a bonus tracks duets with Michael Bublé and Delta Goodrem for his 2006 Duets: An American Classic album, performed it on Saturday Night Live with Christina Aguilera, and again performed it with Aguilera at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2007. "Up on the Roof" is a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and recorded in 1962 by The Drifters. Released at the tail end of that year, the song became a big hit, reaching number 5 on the US pop singles chart. The best known version, by other artists, was James Taylor's on "Flag" (1979). It was released as a single, charting modestly into the Top 30 of the US pop singles chart. Rearranged around Taylor's trademark acoustic guitar playing and vocal accents and interjections.
