The costumes for the giants are among the best! Matti Salminen reappears in this cycle, even more impressively, as Hagen. Some of that already posted. Das Rheingold ("The Rhine Gold"), by Richard Wagner, premiered at the National Theatre in Munich on 22 September 1869. Kaspar Bausewein was the original Fafner, and he also created roles of Harald in Die Feen, Veit Pogner in Die Mesitersinger, and Hunding in Die Walkure. Wagner stays pretty close to the source material (here, the Old Norse Volsunga Saga) in depicting Fafner's actions.

A noted author and commentator, Rheingold has a proven record of accurate technology and social forecasting, over two decades of syndicated columns, best-selling books, and pioneering online enterprises. His latest research and forthcoming book focuses on 21st century literacies -- how individuals and organizations learn to use digital media effectively and credibly. He coined the term "virtual community" in 1987 An acknowledged authority on the marriage of mobile phone, PC, and wireless internet, Rheingold's previous work reveals how this convergence has changed the way we meet, mate, entertain, govern, and conduct business. His book Smart Mobs, named one of the Big Ideas books of 2002 by The New York Times, chronicles the new forms of collective action and cooperation made possible by mobile communications, pervasive computing, and the Internet. "Das Rheingold" (The Rhine Gold), first of the four operas of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (The Ring of the Nibelung). Music and text by Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Conductor: Georg Solti & Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Wagner's essential peculiarity is therepresentation of the drama as an element of introspection; his operas can't be considered operas in the traditional meaning of the word, but great compositions where music, singing, poetry and psychology merge to interpret the life. In Wagner's conception the drama expect an almost religious attention, which the public has to attend to as the story takes place in his mind; so the drama rises magically from the imagination of the public before being in music. The music of the Cycle is composed by a mosaic of leading motifs, the leitmotiv, which embode characters or feelings, so their continuos reappearing produces a sort of psychological premonition. No closed-form pieces or arias interfer with the free flow of the narration which goes on without solution of continuity from the beginning to the end of every act, subjecting the singing to the comment of an orchestra enormous for the number of instruments and resonant wideness. It is also important in Wagner the use of chromatism, that incessant wave of chromatic spirals which is took to extremes till it leave the tonal structure. The <b>...</b>

Wagner - Das Rheingold Finale, sung in English ("Heda! Heda hedo!")
Finale from "Das Rheingold" by German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883), the first opera in of the Ring Cycle, "Der Ring des Nibelungen". In this scene, the thunder god Donner (Thor) summons a storm to clear the atmosphere and Froh (Freyr) builds a rainbow bridge to allow the gods passage into the newly constructed palace Walhall (Valhalla). Only the trickster god of fire Loge (Loki) remains on earth, telling the audience that he wishes destruction on the gods for their deceit. Finally, the Rhine-maidens mourn the loss of their magical gold and declare that the glory of the gods is an illusion.
