GUITAR STYLES: Memphis Style Rhythm & Blues

www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: June 21, 2011 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I am just getting heavy into Memphis guitar sounds. Steve Cropper is my favorite player for this style. I was wondering if you could do a lesson covering how the players in this style smoothly combine funky blues rhythms & licks. This seems like the main backbone to the style, but I'm having trouble combining the lead & rhythm together. Daniel -- San Antonio A: Memphis style has a few attributes that are very unique. Most notable are the two and three note licks that get added in around the rhythms. There are also technical ideas with string dampening, bends and slides that are vital to learn with this style as well. The complete lesson article for this video will be available on the Creative Guitar Studio website shortly. Boogie Woogie : Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra : "Sally Zuzas"

Movie recorded at a concert in Birmingham, March 2010. This tune harks back to the golden ages of Boogie Woogie and is generally credited as being an old Pete Johnson and Big Joe Turner song, as indeed Jools' himself credits this at the end. Great 'Big Band' with the twelve strong horn section {5 saxophones, 4 trombones and 3 trumpets} greatly adding to the Boogie/Swing feel of the piece, with Jools as ever playing some great stuff at the piano. On a personal note, due to the small stage there was a very unusual stage placing of the Orchestra Section on Jool's side of the stage, where I took up my position - my goodness, what an amazingly powerful feeling to be close-up to the guys playing their instruments!

"A Shot Of Rhythm and Blues" -3 versions - Clyde McPhatter +

This catchy R&B song was first recorded by Arthur Alexander in 1962 as the B-side of You Better Move On. Written by Terry Thompson in the US south. It was not a hit or well known, but musicians picked it up and liked it. I don't know that it has ever been a hit for anyone, but to me it is. Selections: 1) Arthur Alexander 1962 2) Chad Allen and the Expressions - 1964. of Winnipeg Canada, after changing their name from CA + The Reflections, and before becoming The Guess Who. 3) Clyde McPhatter - 1966 Amy label single. a potential hit if circumstances had been right. The Guess Who song is on the Shakin All Over album. Clyde's Amy recordings were recently reissued.

Teena Marie - Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards (Lady Tee RIP)

RBTV was privileged to encounter TEENA MARIE backstage at the 2008 R&B Foundation Awards. Here is the raw uncut footage from her press conference after receiving the award. She will be sadly missed. Camera Bill Tucker and Mike D. www.rhythm-n-blues.org www.officialteenamarie.com/ From TMZ Grammy nominated singer Teena Marie -- once known as Rick James' protégée -- died in her sleep last night at her home in Pasadena at the age of 54 ... TMZ has confirmed with Teena's rep Lynn Jeter. Relatives found Teena's body Sunday morning at her home. Relatives tell TMZ Teena seemed fine yesterday, when she spent Christmas with her brother. Teena spoke at length yesterday with Lynn, who tells TMZ Teena seemed "fine." So far it's unclear what caused the singer's death -- but the Pasadena Police Department tells TMZ they do not suspect foul play. They say it looks like Teena died of natural causes. The LA County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy. We're told Teena had a seizure a month ago, but it's unclear what triggered it. Marie was nominated for a Grammy four times ... her first top ten hit was "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love."

Cyril Davies & His Rhythm & Blues All Stars - Country Line Special

Cyril Davies was one of the first British blues harmonica players . In 1962 he formed Blues Incorporated with Alexis Korner along with Charlie Watts , Jack Bruce & Dick Heckstall-Smith & recorded the album R&B from the Marquee. The band was shortlived and in November 1962 he formed Cyril Davies All Stars and recruited Long John Baldry for vocals. Occasional band members were Jeff Beck , Nicky Hopkins & Micky Waller. They recorded a handful of tracks for Pye including Country Line Special . They released two singles in 1963 - May '63 Country Line Special/Chicago Calling Sep '63 Preachin' The Blues/Sweet Mary Tragically, the band proved to be short-lived when Davies succumbed to leukemia and died in January 1964 at the age of only 31. Image at 0,41 features Davies far right with a young Mick Jagger on vocals.
