Before machine-made banh trang became popular, my aunt, Di Yen, and cousin, Trinh, produced rice paper in Viet Nam by hand and sold it locally in their town just north of Saigon. On my last visit back, I asked them to show me how they used to make it. They prepared a special batch from stone-ground, whole-grain red rice. Rice bran, stored in that big metal drum, drops down to fuel an earthen stove. Gently steaming water rises through tightly stretched cloth and cooks the very thin, smooth rice batter in seconds. My cousin, who hasn't done this for a year, still remembers the rhythmic choreography of stirring, ladling, spreading, rolling and unrolling. Of course, she makes it all look so easy! Each mat, as it's covered by still warm and wet banh trang, is arranged in the sun so that the rice paper can dry completely into the delicate, translucent rounds that we love so much. Look closely and you might notice that the roller is covered with the leg fabric from an old pair of jeans. (The voices you hear are my mom and me.) Using Silicone dry-mounting paper you can create a rice paper board for watercolor painting very easily. Materials: Xuan rice paper, Silicone release paper and bristol paper, iron and denim cloth. Steps: 1. Cut the Silicone Release Paper to the same size as the backing board or a little bit smaller (about 1/4" - 1/8") than the board. (No need to measure!) 1. Place the silicone release paper filme side facing down, or mounting board, foam board etc. 2. Iron it at 180 degree fahrenheit and let it cool a little bit. 4. Peel the release paper off and save it for use in step 6. 5. If necessary, trim the extra adhesive film along the board edge with a glue gun, knife or scissors. 6. Lay the rice apper smooth side up on the adhesive film and cover it with the release paper from step 4. 7. Now it's ready to iron it on. *Silicone release paper is available at www.BlueHeronArts.com

Asian-style spring and summer rolls are easy to create at home and can make a cooling supper on a hot evening. Use fresh herbs, such as mint, cilantro and basil and wrap With colorful, cooling vegetables -- such as shredded carrot, cucumber, or bean sprouts -- and vermicelli rice noodles. Add cooked, chilled seafood, tofu or chicken if desired. The method is easy: Soak rice paper rounds (found in many Asian markets and some supermarkets) in warm water until pliable. Lay one soaked round at a time onto a clean cutting board and arrange meat, vegetables and rice noodles in the middle of the rice paper round, leaving about half an inch on each end. Keep in mind that the rice paper rounds are transparent, so arrange fillings -- halved shrimp or tiny slices of radish, for example -- neatly as they will show through the finished roll. To roll, fold the bottom of rice paper round over the filling and start to roll tightly. Fold in ends and finish rolling. Cover with moist paper towels while you roll the rest. This is the video demonstration of this rolling technique.

This is Stage #4 in my process of making a fiberglass skimboard. I applied the art in step 2, screenprinted the logos in step #3 and now I am glassing the board. In this video I am using the pre-printed logos on rice paper, 2 layers of 6oz fiberglass and Resin Research 2000 CE Epoxy. The rice paper soaks up the resin and disappears so all you see is the printed logo through the glass. This 6 min video actually took about 1 hour to complete. I am not giving a step by step as you might just fall asleep. There are many steps in between the cuts but you should get a feel for what it takes. What's Next? I will glass the top side and start with the final 2 coats of resin. Next is the flood coat and then the gloss coat . Stay tuned.......

Dragon's Egg has a lot going on inside. Rice paper "confettii", glitter, fizzy candies. Scented with lemon oil and bergamot oil. I'm not a huge citrus lover but this is a bright, fresh, very nice scent. Not purely lemon. Very, very nice. Scent lingers on the skin. Tangerine/orange water. The rice paper dissolves for the most part. A few circles may be left here or there. Very glittery bath. Not as much as Sunny Side but a lot. Clean up requires some rinsing after the water has drained. I'm not a big glitter fan so I have been cracking the bombs and taking the glitter "centers" out. Don't really notice the fizzy candies in this one. Maybe a small pop here or there, not much. Best part of this bomb, for me, is the fragrance. :)
