History was made today when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train and Union Pacific Railroad's "Challenger," No. 3985, joined together, literally, between Speer, Wyo., and Denver, Colo., to celebrate US railroad heritage. Challenger pulled the mile-long circus train, packed full of international performers, exotic animals, and all the equipment needed to present the all-new Ringling Bros. Circus, Barnum's FUNundrum!SM, which makes a two-week stop in Denver. Union Pacific's No. 3985 continues on a six-state tour from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Gorham, Ill. "We are proud that No. 3985 pulled the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train into Denver. A record was set when Challenger pulled a 65-car train that is more than 6000 tons and nearly 6100 feet long, the most for a steam locomotive in the 21st century," said Dick Hartman, Union Pacific's director of public affairs for Colorado and Wyoming. The combined trains arrived shortly after 10:00 am and were met by over 500 excited fans at the intersection of York Street and East 47th Avenue. A welcome celebration followed that featured Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson and performers from Ringling Bros., officials from Union Pacific, and Denver city auditor, Dennis Gallagher, who presented a proclamation from the Mayor of Denver. The company was started when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey and PT Barnum was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus. The Ringling brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the circuses separately until they were finally merged in 1919. In 1957 John Ringling North changed the circus from using their own portable tents to using venues, such as sports stadiums that had the seating already in place. In 1967 Irvin Feld bought the circus, but in 1971 he sold it to Mattel. He bought it back in 1982. The Barnum & Bailey Circus (The Greatest Show on Earth) In 1875, Dan Castello and William Cameron Coup persuaded Barnum to lend his name and financial backing to the circus they had already created in Delavan, Wisconsin. It was called "PT Barnum's Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome". The moniker "Greatest Show on Earth" was added later. Independently of Castello and Coup, James Anthony Bailey had teamed up with James E. Cooper to create the Cooper and Bailey Circus in the 1860s. On February 21, 2011, I had gotten what I had been waiting a very long time for, I finally got the Circus Train. There was some Snow on the ground when I got there, but it melted rather quickly. SEPTA wasn't having a good day on their West Trenton Line at all, with major power problems at West Trenton, most AM rush trains were canceled, with several deadhead moves running too. CSX was forced to contend with them, so here we go: 7:20 AM - First up today was an odd move on CSX called X989-21, which was CSX ES40DC 5470 and CSX SD40-2 8131 running lite to Woodbourne, where they would back in the yard and pick-up a unit Windmill Train, not the crew gave us horn from both the 5470 and the 8131. Unfortunately, SEPTA wouldn't let them go by the Wire Train at West Trenton, and the crew timed out. The crew actually came over to talk to us after the Circus train went by, they said if the got moving, they would've given us a horn show. X989 ? Hard Rock Casino, Biloxi, MS. This is one the newest machines from IGT. It is a one cent machine with great graphics and sound. The top of the machine has great video when you insert money. However, as the video may show, the game is not too exciting. It plays similar to Fire Opals or Serbian Tiger in my opinion.

The 1943 Union Pacific Challenger 3985 Leaves Greeley, Colorado bound for Denver 9/28/2010. Worlds Largest Steam Locomotive pulling the 65 car Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus Train. The Steam Locomotive is 122 Feet long and weighs 1 million pounds. The entire train is 6100 feet long and weighs more than 6000 tons!

Watch UP Challenger 4-6-6-4 #3985, the largest operational steam locomotive in the world, pull Ringling's Blue Unit to Denver on UP's Greeley Subdivision. Per UP's website: "History was made Sept. 28, when No. 3985 pulled a 65-car train that was more than 6000 tons and nearly 6100 feet long, the most for a steam locomotive in the 21st century." Yes, it really happened!! The rumour that surfaced while I was chasing UP 844 on this same route in July came to reality. Word is, Ringling approached UP about making this happen. Timing was right with UP 3985 emerging from dormancy to run the Missouri River Eagle special. One of the most amazing rail experiences I've had in my life, it will be one of those legendary events we talk about for years to come. May 24, 2010 and May 31, 2010: witness it all! The RBBB Circus Train unloads its cargo and load the animals as well as run-by's on both of these dates, elephants, clowns, trains, a whole lotta fun! On the afternoon of May 24, we first see the passenger section of the train on its way to be stored in Harrisburg during the shows. We catch it just east of the Tara signals in Hummelstown. Power is: NS ES40DC 7677 NS ES40DC 7674 The other part of the train with all the containers and equipment was back at the Derry Road crossing in Hershey. Here, they unload the containers and line them along the street before they are trucked over the Giant Center. We caught them unloading for awhile as well as a passing 14G. Unfortunately, they had already unloaded the animals before I got there, so we came back on Memorial Day after chasing H2W and the OCS and caught the reloading of the animals and the elephant march. NS put new power on the animal cars and ran it push-pull between Harrisburg Termindal and Hershey. After it was loaded, we then catch it on the west side of the Tara signals. Power is: NS SD70M-2 2759 NS D9-40CW 9585 Circus train symbols were 047.
