London Metropolitan police have reportedly urged British media outlets to hand over footage of the riots that swept the capital in early August voluntarily, without recourse to official procedures. Police say the images could help them identify criminals, and have vowed to obtain the footage through court action if the broadcasters and newspapers do not comply. Officers have been approaching media corps privately, appealing to their sense of social responsibility. A British news agency said Wednesday that one of its photographers had suffered a leg injury during sectarian clashes in Belfast, Northern Ireland, overnight Tuesday. Police said about 400 people were involved in unrest in the Short Strand, a small Catholic community in a predominantly Protestant area of east Belfast. Hooded youths ripped up paving stones and set rubbish bins on fire in central Athens as police gave chase and fired tear gas and stun grenades. Peaceful protesters nearby braved thick clouds of tear gas to stage an outdoor street party, banging pots and pans in time to music on loudspeakers. Eight injured police officers were taken in hospital, at least one of them with head injuries. The unrest began after a protest over the fatal shooting by police of 29-year-old Mark Duggan on Thursday. About 300 people gathered outside the police station on the High Road after demonstrators demanded "justice".
