Always nice to play around with open strings, here the open D string and using notes from the D mixolydian scale on the G string. You only get this sound and feel with a pick, It would just sound wrong with fingerstyle, therefore all you young bassplayers starting out: be able to play fingerstyle, slap and pickstyle, if you aim at being serious bassplayers that are able to cover many styles.
