Trail Ridge Road - Rocky Mountain National Park

Nick Molle takes you on a trip to Trail Ridge Road just before it opens for the season to show you how the Park Service clears all that snow just in time for the first visitor. Watch more of these programs on EPTV Channel 8 in Estes Park, Colorado or visit www.rockymountainchannel.com Trail Ridge Road provides spectacular views of the majestic scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is the highest continuous motorway in the United States, with more than eight miles lying above 11000' and a maximum elevation of 12183'. The name "Trail Ridge Road" derives from it proximity to historic pathways used by native peoples to cross the Rocky Mountains. Trail Ridge Road was designed to replace Fall River Road, which proved inadequate for modern motor travel as soon as it opened in 1920. Trail Ridge Road was designed to have more gentle grades, broader curves, and a greater variety of scenic experiences. The sunny, ridge-top location would also reduce snow accumulations and allow Trail Ridge Road to open earlier then its shady, snow-laden predecessor.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

While we were camping at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado we made the trek up the Andrew's Glacier Hike! Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado is one of the busiest National Parks we have visited in recent years. According to the official RMNP page on the NPS site the park had over 3 million visitors in 2010! Compare that number to the 374640 visitors that a park like Big Bend got in 2010. During our visit it was obvious of the crowds that flock to this famous park, we had to make reservations in advance to hold a specific site. We were lucky enough to get all the nights we wanted in just one site; we have been on trips where we had to hop around to different camp sites just to stay as long as we wanted to, in the Florida Keys we stayed in three different sites just for three nights! Of course this wont happen if you reserve pretty far in advance! But we all know it doesn't always work out this way, plans can change and last minute trips are always the best to put together! RMNP is beautiful! We took advantage of the hikes in this park and decided we wanted to hike out to a glacier since we don't always get this opportunity in Texas. When we reached the trail head for the Andrew's Glacier hike the parking lot was pretty full and it was very large, that was the first sign that we would not get much alone time on this hike. There is alternate parking that you can park your car at and then take the shuttle up to the trail head. This however would have out more time ...

Rocky Mountain National Park

This picture montage is from my trip to Colorado in August of 07. I never once thought I'd see glaciers, but there were tons of them. This is by far the most beautiful place I ever been. All of these pictures are by me, on my hikes, there are tons more then this, but these are the best. Every picture taken is from above 9000 feet, and some are taken from about 12000 feet which is awesome. Area's Featured: Alberta Falls, area around Bear Lake (not the lake itself though), Dream Lake, Lake Haiyaha, area around Alpine Vistors Center, Never Summer Mountains, Ypsilon Mountain and surrounding areas.
