vintage: NSU RO 80 | drive it!

It was Europe's Car of the Year when it was introduced, and a flop with car buyers. But in many respects, the innovative NSU Ro-80 was years ahead of its time. When NSU, traditionally a maker of small cars, introduced the Ro-80 in 1967, the company hoped to establish itself in the market for up-scale mid-sized cars. The Ro-80 was powered by a 1-liter rotary engine that produced 115 hp. It had front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension, disc-brakes on all four wheels, and a clean and distinctive aerodynamic shape. Unfortunately, the rotary engine initially had major reliability problems and the car was never a success. Even so, its timeless design and many innovations make it a true milestone in automotive history.

Decaying NSU Ro80, discovered in a Norfolk back garden.

We recovered this Ro80 from a back garden in Sheringham, Norfolk. It had been there for a good ten years or so. The lady that owned it wanted it to be of use to someone rather than just scrap it, and kindly let me have it. It's unfortunately too far gone to save but I will salvage all I can from it. It may surprise some people that I visited the car several months earlier, armed with some fuel, a battery and some plugs and got it going, there were a few surprised spiders etc when it fired up!

NSU Ro80 Discovered in Chipstead Woods, Surrey UK Part 3

I found out about this Ro80 many years ago. I was told about it by a work colleague, they lived nearby and her son remebered the car being there from when he was still at school! The woods used to be a common dumping ground for stolen cars. I went along with friend Clive Thomas, his son Philip (filming) and a wheelbarrow full of tools to remove the engine and anything else of use we could find. The thinking was if it had been a young car at the time it ended up there, the engine could well have been low mileage and been of some use for parts. On stripping the engine we found the housings to have virtually no wear, but they had (as pretty much expected) corroded beyond use. Nonetheless, we found a few bits of use and it made for an interesting day out!

NSU RO80 after measering the compression it seems like on bought rotors i don't have to much of it,i hope the oil will seal the rotors. if i can fire it up,make the engine hot,the compression may rice,,and the sealrings may close the chambers better.

1987 Vauxhall Carlton Advert Features NSU Ro80

In this 1987 UK advert for the Vauxhall Carlton they used an NSU Ro80 to show how the Carlton "Certainly puts the skids under it's rivals" despite the fact that the Ro80 came out in 1967 and ceased production some 10 years before the Carlton even came out! It was used due it's modern looks so as not to offend any of the other current manufacturers of the time by using one of their vehicles. The Ro80 was clearly handbrake turned for such dramatic effect.

Audi Museum Germany - Full Tour Part 10 *NSU RO80, AU 1000SP, DKW Junior*

Gotta love your Auto Union 1000SP s!!!. The convertible's are nice. I also like the RO80's, and if they got there apex seals down and had better technology like the RX8 uses today, they may have been a success! They were kinda expensive for there time, but smooth, and really a luxurious car overall. DKW Auto Union Horch Wanderer Audi. I try to stop at each plaque so you guys can pause and read the literature on each vehicle if you wish to. You might be able to notice that Im "kinda" an Audi enthusiast and collector. In my excitement Im not even able to voice words properly while Im here, thats as excited as I get : )

Garmin Maposaurus Ad - Features NSU Ro80 & Ford Cortina

The NSU Ro80 featured in this advertisement is one of mine. It was filmed in 2006. Because the advert was destined for the US they wanted a left hand drive which I fortunately had. The Ro80 is a 1967 model and believed to be the second oldest known survivor.
