This Week In Social Media - Simon Mainwaring on This Week in Social Media--Live Pilot

0:00-1:00 We're here today on the This Week in Social Media pilot episode! 1:00-1:45 My guest today is Simon Mainwaring of We First (wefirstbranding.com). 1:45-3:00 Tell us about your recent work with charitable organizations and how that shifted your thoughts on branding, Simon. 3:00-4:00 So far big businesses haven't done spectacularly well, have they? Are there any examples of companies really doing a great job in social media? 4:45-9:00 Are there any examples of companies who were lagging behind and are now struggling to catch up? 9:00-10:30 So if you attempt to control the conversation too much, you're inevitably going to get backlash, right? 10:30-12:30 When you say the company needs to become human, you mean that there's no single individual behind the brand? Is that a big shift for some companies? 12:30-13:30 It's interesting that companies are now hiring Chief Listening Officers, just to make sure the customers are being heard. 13:30-17:45 You bring up the notion of trust a lot in your book. I think this stems from a brand's desire to over-control the message. What are your thoughts? 17:45-19:30 So one message to brands is that you have to participate or your voice will be lost, right? 19:30-20:15 We're taking a look at the top trends on Twitter this week--the Jersey Shore, Justin Bieber and Harry Potter all made the list. 20:15-21:15 How does a big brand work itself into these conversations? 21:15-23:30 Simon talks about how Mountain Dew crowd-sourced the ...

Mark Pesce and Brad McCarty - TWiSocial Media #01

0:00-1:00 On This Week in Social Media we're talking about People Power with Mark Pesce and Brad McCarty. 1:00-1:30 Mark, how are things in Sydney? 1:30-4:15 Mark, you developed a whole world of virtual reality through VRML. How do you think we've ended up since the vision you had in the 1990s? 4:15-5:15 At one point, the tweets were moving faster than the storm (Hurricane Irene) itself. 5:15-7:00 Welcome to Brad, North American editor for The Next Web. How are things in Nashville? 7:00-8:30 Brad- I was looking at a story out of Indonesia this week about a woman who ran a social media campaign for an election in Indonesia and is now getting offers as a social media coach. 8:30-11:00 This week, we're taking a look at MTV and their use of social media for the Movie Awards. Any reaction, Mark or Brad? 11:00-11:30 At that event, Beyonce broke the news of her pregnancy and generated more tweets per minute than any other world event, ever. 11:30-13:30 Even a year after the BP Deepwater Horizon incident, BP continues to lose in its social media efforts to rehabilitate the brand. 13:30-16:00 Doesn't it seem strange that a head of PR wouldn't use these tools themselves and be familiar with them? 16:00-17:00 Brad: Pitch me on Twitter. 140 characters or less is what I have time to read. 17:00-19:00 Marketers say they want to have a dialogue with their customers, but their dollars are still spent on traditional, one-sized media. 19:00-20:15 Mark: Guidelines are different than brands ...

METal Breakfast 11/06/2010

Goodbye To Gutenberg More than any other technology, the printing press has shaped our understanding of the world. The impact of the printed word is much bigger than we realize. For the past 500 years, human culture has been dominated by a print metaphor that began with Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, a metaphor that is encoded in nearly every modern human invention, from the assembly line to packaged goods to mass media and entertainment. Our tools, our politics, our health care and education systems, and our consumer products and mass marketing are the artifacts of the Gutenberg revolution. And all of these are now undergoing a process of radical transformation, all at once. The end of the Gutenberg era is at hand. Today's chaos and cultural turbulence signal the transition to a new era. This era will be shaped by two-way media, dynamic feedback loops, collaborative knowledge-sharing, virtualization, and ultra-flexible production. Our future will be determined by the way we manage and exploit the explosive increase in information. Today, as the print era comes to a close, we can get a glimpse of the way our world is being shaped by new communications technology. This METal talk, by a veteran of digital media, provides vivid illustrations and metaphors to reveal the hidden power of the technology platforms that define the scope of innovation and social progress. This change is way bigger than the end of TV or 500 million Facebook friends. This Week's Guest ...

Your Brain on Games: The Hidden Psychology of Gaming | DETSARIDIS, FERGUSSON, LAZZARO, TERCEK

In this panel, Demetri Detsaridis (General Manager, Zynga New York), Michael Fergusson (CEO, Ayogo) and Nicole Lazzaro (CEO, XEODesign) will discuss the overlap between behavioral psychology and game design and development, as well as the possibilities of better employing psychological insights in the creation of games. As dramatic as the impact of statistical analysis and behavioral economics has been on gaming and the games industry, applied psychology has largely remained the province of player research departments at AAA console developers...or been overlooked entirely. Bringing this field to the fore could be another sea change for the industry, pushing gaming even further into the mass market or (depending on your perspective) pulling games one more step away from becoming art. What can we learn from psychology, how can we use it to understand what we're already doing, and can it help us build better games in the future? For slides visit: casualconnect.org

Futurist Mark Pesce is working on a book with Robert Tercek titled "The Next Billion Seconds", and based on excerpts just published it looks like it will be fascinating.
