English lyrics of this version United forever in friendship and labour, Our mighty republics will ever endure. The great Soviet Union will live through the ages. The dream of a people their fortress secure. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Long live our People, united and free. Strong in our friendship tried by fire. Long may our crimson flag inspire, Shining in glory for all men to see. Through days dark and stormy where Great Lenin led us Our eyes saw the bright sun of freedom above and Stalin our Leader with faith in the People, Inspired us to build up the land that we love. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Long live our People, united and free. Strong in our friendship tried by fire. Long may our crimson flag inspire, Shining in glory for all men to see. We fought for the future, destroyed the invader, and brought to our homeland the Laurels of Fame. Our glory will live in the memory of nations and all generations will honour her name. CHORUS: Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child-Paul Robeson

There's so much to be said about Mr. Robeson. He was an athlete, attorney, incredible singer, movie star and much more. His father was born in slavery but escaped to the north via the underground railroad, at age 15! Our country took much of his pride away when they confiscated his passport in 1950, stating that to retrieve it he would have to admit to being a Communist. He refused.DISCLAIMER: All rights reserved to the production companies and music labels that distributed and produced the music and performance respectively. "The House I Live In" (Paul Robeson)

The original lyrics to this powerful song...Bass Paul Robeson at his best. THE HOUSE I LIVE IN (1947) What is America to me? A name, a map or a flag I see, A certain word, "Democracy", What is America to me? The house I live in, The friends that I have found, The folks beyond the railroad and the people all around, The worker and the farmer, the sailor on the sea, The men who built this country, that's America to me. The words of old Abe Lincoln, of Jefferson and Paine, of Washington and Jackson and the tasks that still remain. The little bridge at Concord, where Freedom's Fight began, of Gettysburg and Midway and the story of Bataan. The house I live in, my neighbors White and Black, the people who just came here or from generations back, the town hall and the soapbox, the torch of Liberty, a home for all God's children, that's America to me. The house I live in, the goodness everywhere, a land of wealth and beauty with enough for all to share. A house that we call "Freedom", the home of Liberty, but especially the people, that's America to me. But especially the people--that's the true America...

Paul Robeson - Old Man River

The words of Old Man River were (thankfully) to change many times since the original version was written by Hammerstein and Kerr. The first line "Niggers all work on the Mississippi etc" moved on to "Darkies all work..." and eventually through being "The old Man I'd like to be" it eventually became "The Old Man I don't like to be". Harry Belafonte explains other changes within the song.

Sanders of the River: Starring Paul Robeson, Leslie Banks and Nina Mae McKinney (1935)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Sanders of the River is a 1935 film directed by Zoltán Korda, based on the stories of Edgar Wallace. It was later spoofed in the 1938 Will Hay film Old Bones of the River, which also featured the characters of Commissioner Sanders, Captain Hamilton and Bosambo seen in this film, but played by different actors. The story describes how a British colonial District Officer in 1930's Nigeria tries to rule his province fairly. He struggles against gun-runners and slavers and enlists the support of a native chieftain. The African-American entertainer and athlete, Paul Robeson accepted the role of Bosambo during a time when he was living in London and was engaged in deep explorations of the roots of African culture through studies of language and music. He felt that if he could portray the African leader, Bosambo, with cultural accuracy and dignity, he could help audiences—especially Black audiences—to understand and respect the roots of Black culture. The filmmakers even took an unusual step towards authenticity by sending a film crew on a four-month voyage into remote areas of Africa to record traditional African dances and ceremonies. These would be interwoven with the studio scenes. After the filming, Robeson was asked back to the studio for retakes of some scenes. He discovered that the film's message had been changed during editing; it seemed to justify imperialism and upholding the 'White Man's Burden'; the finished film is ...

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 1943 sung by Paul Robeson

The Warsaw Ghetto Rebellion - April 19 - May 16, 1943 Sung by Paul Robeson at the 1949 Moscow Concert (live) in Yiddish and historical pictures of the burning of the Ghetto by the Germans. This famous song was sung by Robeson as part of his legendary Moscow Concert of June 13, 1949.which Paul Robeson gave while on his tour in the Soviet Union, at the time under the Stalin oppressive dictatorship. This song was sung by him as a tribute to the Jewish partisan fighters of the Ghetto. It was also a surprise that Robeson gave at the Concert. His son tells of the introduction of the song from his father's memoirs that: "... One could hear a pin drop during my father remarks about the deep and enduring cultural ties between the Jewish communities of the Soviet Union and the United States, about the common tradition of the great Jewish writer Sholem Aleichem, and about the continued vitality of the Yiddish language. Finally he announced that he would sing a song of the Jewish partisans who fought to the death against their Fascist oppressors in the Warsaw Ghetto. Since the song had to be sung in Yiddish, he would explain the lyrics in Russian, as follows: 'Never say that you have reached the very end When leaden skies a bitter future may portend; For sure the hour for which we yearn will not arrive Arid our marching steps will thunder: we survive'. For a moment there was no sound from the stunned audience; then a single intrepid young woman stood up and applauded, and the entire ...

Chautauqua 2006: Paul Robeson (Part 1)

This is a Chautauqua 2006 portrayal of Paul Robeson by actor Marvin Jefferson. Paul Robeson (1898-1976) epitomized the 20th-century Renaissance man. An exceptional athlete, actor, singer, scholar, and author, Robeson was valedictorian at Rutgers University and earned a law degree from Columbia University. He ultimately opted to pursue an acting career, and was especially noted for his rendition of "Ol' Man River" in the musical Show Boat and for his groundbreaking lead performance in Shakespeare's Othello. In time, however, Robeson's social activism eclipsed his career as a performer and his radical political beliefs eroded his mainstream popularity. Marvin Jefferson has an extensive background as a professional actor and since 1997 has portrayed Paul Robeson in every school in the Newark, New Jersey, school district. In 2005, he appeared as Robeson in the Colorado Chautauqua. He taught at Essex County College, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the Newark Community School of the Arts, and currently teaches acting at Bloomfield College. Jefferson studied acting at the Mason Gross School of Arts, Rutgers University. Chautauqua (shuh-taw-kwa) takes its name from a lake in upstate New York, beginning in 1874 as a training course for Sunday School teachers. In 1878 the Chautauqua movement expanded its philosophy of adult education to include an appreciation for the arts and humanities. By 1904, Chautauqua took to the road as part of the Lyceum movement, bringing ...

Portraying 10 characters he chronologically takes us thru the life of history's 1ST Black Renaissance man & one of America's most complex, brilliant citizens. Magnificently performed without intermission, with props, several wardrobe changes & an inspiring finger-snapping Jazz, Bebop, Gospel, Big band soundtrack. As laugh -out loud funny & entertaining as it is educational, Kenyatta ages from a 5 year old Paul, to the 70 yr old, world weary warrior that the blacklisted Robeson had become. The show covers the Harlem Renaissance, with music from Ellington, Coltrane, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway & Robeson himself. Kenyatta uses his stand up comedy skills, satire, singing & brilliant storytelling to introduce us to Robeson. His portrayal reveals the sense of humor, charm, wit, romantic passion, & human frailties of a life filled with triumphant achievement & the tragedy of hopes unfulfilled. In the final scene, Robeson's spine tingling account of the horrors of captivity & the Middle Passage where children Slaves were tossed into the sea; is so electrifyingly powerful it gives you Goosebumps. Here is African American Singer & Actor Paul Robeson (1898-1976) Singing Trees composed by Joyce Kilmer & Oscar Rasbach, on a 1939 Victor black and gold label, 10" 78rpm record from 1939 recorded in Europe. The Victrola is a Victor Crank style Portable which I estimate to be from the 1930's. The Poem trees was written by .Alfred Joyce Kilmer (December 6, 1886 July 30, 1918) an American journalist, poet, literary critic, lecturer and editor. Though a prolific poet whose works celebrated the common beauty, most of his works are unknown, but a select few of his poems remain popular and are published frequently in anthologies. At the time of his deployment to Europe during the first World War (1914 - 1918), Kilmer was considered the leading American Catholic poet and lecturer of his generation. A sergeant in the 165th US Infantry Regiment, he was killed at the Second Battle of Marne in 1918 at the age of 31.
