Robot Birds: Designing Micro Air Vehicles

From his upturned palm, Ryan Carr launches then expertly flies what appears to be a remote-controlled bird. Later, the aeronautical engineer uses special equipment to examine the machine's flight characteristics. scientist Joseph McDermott works at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, Ohio, with materials so tiny the width of a human hair is huge by comparison. Welcome to the world of micro air vehicles (MAVs) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Here hobby-store aircraft are helping scientists design a futuristic line of miniature flying spy vehicles. We take the technology that we have and we try to design something that does the same thing as a hummingbird or dragonfly does," explains Carr.

Electrolux Design Lab 2010 Finalist: Bio Robot Refrigerator by Yuriy Dmitriev, Russia

Four times smaller than a conventional refrigerator, the Bio Robot cools biopolymer gel through luminescence. Rather than shelves, the non sticky, odourless gel morphs around products to create a separate pod that suspends items for easy access. Without doors, draws and a motor 90% of the appliance is solely given over to its intended purpose. At the same time, all food, drink and cooled products are readily available, odours are contained, and items are kept individually at their optimal temperature by bio robots. The fridge is adaptable -- it can be hung vertically, horizontally, and even on the ceiling. Different sizes and dimensions allow it to perfectly fit the accordant dwelling.

ECCEROBOT - Embodied Cognition in a Compliantly Engineered Robot

Standard humanoid robots mimic the human form but the mechanisms used in such robots are very different from those in humans, and the characteristics of the robot reflect this. This places severe limitations on the kinds of interactions such robots can engage in, on the knowledge they can aquire of their environment, and therefore on the nature of their cognitive engagement with the environment. However a new kind of robot is just beginning to emerge - the anthropomimetic robot. Instead of just copying the appearance of a human, it copies the inner structures and mechanisms - bones, joints, musles, and tendons, and thus has the potential for human-like action and interaction in the world. ECCE, developed within the EU's 7th Framework Programme, is the first robot that follows the anthropomimetic design principles very closely. The project has three major goals: (1) to design and build a robot using anthropomimetic principles, (2) to characterise its dynamics and control it, (3) to exploit its human-like characteristics to produce some human-like cognitive features.

Robots for Daily Life

ANCHOR: Robot designers gathered at Robo_Japan 2008 in Yokohama, Japan to showcase their latest developments. NTD's Yukichi Negishi brings us there. STORY: Within the last decade, cell phones and computers have become a part of modern life. In the near future, we might see robots not only in assembly lines but just as much a part of our daily life as cell phones, cars, and computers. Tomotaka Takahashi, award winning robot creator, hopes to see robots in our life not just for convenience but also as our friends. [Tomotaka Takahashi, Robot Creator]: Robots are going to be in your home and your family member pretty soon. We tend to think about the practicality or usage robots, but we never think that way (about) your family or your boyfriend or girlfriend. Please treat them as your friend. Current robot designs mostly resemble male qualities like stiff movement and dont have many feminine qualities. Creating feminine robots is one of next steps to making robots a part of our daily life. [Tomotaka Takahashi, Robot Creator]: I think first of all there is no female type robot because there are technical problems. The first one is its harder to put all the parts inside the body. I [have to] use smaller parts and also design. Second one is that most of researcher in the robotics field is male, so we dont know how to realize female type robots. You know, it has nothing to do with wear skirts or having longer hair. Tomotakas mini climbing robot helped the electronics company ...

Android Megaminxer - How to solve Megaminx with your phone

Megaminxer is probably the first robot in the world to solve a Megaminx puzzle. The Megaminx is a dodecahedron with 12 faces, each with 5 edges. Each face can be rotated in a similar way to the well-known Rubik's Cube puzzle. The robot itself is built out of LEGO using a Mindstorms NXT kit for driving the mechanics. An HTC Desire smartphone running a custom Android app is the brain of the solver. The app uses the phone's camera to capture images of each face of the Megaminx which it then processes to determine the colors of the scrambled puzzle. After working out the solution, the app transmits the moves to the NXT controller via bluetooth to instruct it to solve the Magaminx. The mechanism used by Megaminxer has been adapted from the "MultiCuber" robot designs as seen in MultiCuber 777 www.youtube.com The most challenging parts of the mechanical design were creating pentagonal shaped rings and modifying the tilting mechanism to cope with the obtuse angles between edges and faces using LEGO bricks that more naturally form shapes with right angles. The software uses an enhanced table-driven algorithm developed from one previously created for solving the standard 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube puzzle. Check out the blog: blogs.arm.com

Evolution of an Artificial Neural Network to control a crawling robot.

I designed and created this robot (Lola) for my a senior design class. I wanted to look at learning and control so I choose to use an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as my controller/brain.The way it worked was that the robot has six sensors. These sensors fed into the input layer of the ANN. The information propogated through the network and would come out of the output nodes. The output nodes would then control the speed ad direction of the main servos controlling the arm. In order to find the right weights and topologies to get the ANN to read in the sensors and then actuate the servos to produce crawling behavior, I used an genetic algorithm to evolve an ANN. The genetic algorithm I used is called NEAT. I read about it from a paper called "Competitive Coevolution through Evolutionary Complexificaition" by Kenneth Stanley. If you search in google the first link will take you to the paper. I plan on putting up at least one more video which shows how the ANNs are producing the crawling behavior. If anyone knows of a free and easy to use movie maker that allows me to play two movies side by side please let me know. But please comment or send me messages and tell me what you guys think. Update (6/5/10) Here's a link to the paper. If you guys like it and want to use something from it please ask and/or cite. I'm more than happy to talk to people about it and see the work continued. www.engin.swarthmore.edu/e90/2008/reports/Roby%20Velez.pdf

Toyota "Winglet" Personal Transport Assistant Robot #DigInfo

DigInfo - movie.diginfo.tv http www.carbodydesign.com Toyota developed the "Winglet" personal transport assistance robot as one of the "Toyota partner robots" now being developed by Toyota for supporting human activity. The new transport robot is designed to be ridden in the standing position. The robot body has a projected area that is equivalent to the size of an A3 sheet of paper, is light enough to be carried, and is controlled with sensors that constantly detect the rider's position to enable stabilized electric powered travel on two wheels. The robot also features a unique parallel linkage mechanism that allows the rider to steer the robot forward and back and to turn by merely shifting his or her weight. As a result, the robot can be comfortably used with peace of mind even in narrow or crowded locations. The Winglet is available in three different models, which include Type L, Type M, and Type S, and each model is achieved by changing the steering unit on the upper body to offer a different operation feeling that ranges from practical to a sporty, hands-free ride. The ideal model for the intended application can be selected from the three models. Toyota intends to achieve practical application of its "partner robot" within the next 10 years and intends to aggressively move forward with developments to meet that goal. Good Design Expo 2008

Robonaut

Robonaut is a humanoid robot designed by the Robot Systems Technology Branch at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The Robonaut project seeks to develop and demonstrate a robotic system that can function as an EVA astronaut equivalent. Robonaut jumps generations ahead by eliminating the robotic scars (eg, special robotic grapples and targets) and specialized robotic tools of traditional on-orbit robotics. However, it still keeps the human operator in the control loop through its telepresence control system. Robonaut is designed to be used for "EVA" tasks, ie, those which were not specifically designed for robots. TRACLabs Inc. researchers were involved in the design of Robonauts manipulators, hands, vision system and automation control software. Visit www.TRAClabs.com for more.
